If you are interested in typing in foreign languages this app is for you.
Imagine that you have a computer with a cheap
keyboard meant for typing English language documents,
but your teacher tells you to write an essay entirely
in German. If you use Abiword to type special
characters this will slow you down. Another option is
to remap your keyboard but this can be a scary nightmare.
The best solution is to use the program Yudit.
It's free and still being supported. It's useful for many
languages not just German. Clicking on the
menu icons should explain most things.
On the negative side, this is an old Unix program
and it shows it age!
Try the following download
YUDIT DOWNLOAD
Instructions: set it up for 'truetype' and then the language you want, for instance 'German'.
Now when you type certain key combinations, you will get a special character.
Some examples:
sz produces the German ß
ae produces the German ä
oe produces the German ö
ue produces the German ü
E$ produces the German €
Oe produces the German Ö
For situations like the German word 'Mauer', Yudit has the following feature
.e produces the German e
However the problem with this trick is you have to remember to type
Mau.er.
Instead I prefer to set up Yudit for several languages,
and then use the function keys to quickly change the mapping.
For instance F1 for German , F2 for straight , and F3 for French
Simply press an Function key when you are in a tricky situation with your language. Example: When typing 'Mauer' switch to F2 then back to F1
You can type 'help' 'help -yes' or 'howto configure' into command field for
extra instructions.
The first time you use Yudit, the document opened is the FAQ, However the
second time You will get a blank document.
To start with a blank document:
In terminal type
Code: Select all
touch file_name.txt
yudit file_name.txt
a wide variety of languages
I got this font from Ubuntu,but made a small change in name.
To use more exotic languages Chinese,Korean,Japanese,Thai
