I've had spontaneous kernel lockups with the two kernel editions for puppy 4.1alpha5 (the initial edition and then the IDE kernel edition). My system seems very stable, it stays working for many hours, then the mouse stops moving, sound stops, screen stops updating, so I assume its a kernel lockup. ...

Hi Barry,

Hey no worries, its probably just a typo in the source code somewhere, I'll fix it up when I can download the Puppy 4.1alpha5-with-IDE-kernel, presumably it'll be findable in the regular place test/puppy-4.1alpha5, I guess I must just be early, I'll check back later.

Well that seems to have fixed the disappearing pmount after ticking the mut check box....this works well..thanks. Swap partitions are still not shown here. Coolies, I'm glad that it fixed for you. The Pmount is a seperate entity to mut, and it doesn't seem to do swap partitions. There is a mut2 gui...

mut2 update - fixes for Dingo 4.1alpha5

Hello Puppians, There are a few reports that mut2 is not working right in the latest dingo 4.1 beta 5. I've fixed up the obvious problem, the one where if you select 'mut' in Pmount, that pmount goes away and never returns... Attached is the binary application only tarball - extract mut, copy it ove...

Hi SHS, It'll either be a sd* or hd* issue until it is properly catered for, which means having them added as the drives/partitions are identified. If you're running an all sd* kernel you may end up needing more defaults for the same level of automatic usability, as usb, ide, sata, scsi drives will ...

Hi, Mut has been adding in any missing /dev drive nodes as needed since 0.1.1 (2005). I guess now that mut isn't so easy to run on Puppy 4 that this issue has started being reported again. @BarryK I designd the mut2 so that it can be run from the initial-ramdisk, if you want to use that during the i...

The patch is for windows pc's, not for DNS servers. So the problem was with a component of windows. I wouldn't worry unless there is a patch announced for the linux kernel.

Hi Jesse, it's been awhile... I looked for /usr/lib/mut/bin/guess_fstype in Puppy-400 & it's not there. I don't know what language disktype is written in, but most of what I need I've got. I posted the app. in Cutting Edge: Squash file maker, try it & tell me what you think. Hi, Oops, yeah ...

Hi Sunburnt, Did you know about guess_fstype ? its a binary program that has been a part of mut since about 2005... It outputs the name of the filesystem type of disk/partition/file. sh-3.00# /usr/lib/mut/bin/guess_fstype Usage: /usr/lib/mut/bin/guess_fstype device um, you could scan through the sou...

Hi chrism, looks like the the experimental version has been removed from the download directory. You might try the 4.1alpha2 release, I think it has the same 2.6.25.4 kernel, follow all the regular download links, but look in the 'test' directory. I'd suggest first booting the alpha2 with pfix=ram, ...

Hi ol_smokey,

have a visual inspection of your motherboard, see if you can see a string of letters and digits, then google them, you may well find your motherboard manual online somewhere.

Hi ol_smokey, It could be the internal wiring for your usb, see if you can find your motherboard manual, they usually list the pins and meanings so you can match them with usb ports/devices. The arrangement is 4 pins in a row, +5V, TxRx-, TxRx+, Ground. But there is a large difference from there in ...

Hi, Normally linux distros come with what is known as "man pages" (short for manual pages). But Puppy is a bit minimalist in this regard, and the man pages for lots of the command line utilities are omitted to save space. However there is an online resource for man pages. www.die.net Just ...

Hi tempestuous, You're right, I was a little ambiguous there. Just to clarify, I built the above gspca 20071224 driver, with and for, the Puppy4 4.01alpha1, the buggy developers only edition. However the Puppy4 4.00 with 2.6.25 kernel may be similar enough for it to work there also, but I've really ...

This is being setup for my partnet, who is computer phobic at best, I need a solution that just works, so, in yours, do you have to start your yahoo client in order to get to the camera controls, which then allows it to work in skype ? Hi Barry, Um, how about not calling things 'alpha' when its a developer testing ideas edition. You may know what alpha implies, but a lot of users have no idea. I'd suggest that you use a much more meaningful tag for such distributions, so as to inspire doubt in the minds of people who are unsure of...

Unfortunately nobody has been able to offer any help, and I'm fast running out of time, so I've shifted to my Ubuntu box. Puppy goes into the cupboard for the moment. So for now I've given up.
