Unable to install Nvidia .pet in Slacko

#1 Post by don922 »

I am trying to install a nvidia-285.05.09-k2.6.37.6-s.pet. in puppy slacko-6.3.2.

When I use the Puppy Package Manager nothing happens and the computer locks up. The same thing happens when I click on the pet and it confirms that I want to install the pet, the computer then locks up.

I have been using this driver in the same computer in puppy528.7-3HD. I loaded the driver via the menu program "get nvidia".

How should I install this pet?

nvidia-285.05.09-k2.6.37.6-s.pet
This pet will not work, because it is for the wrong Linux kernel.
Slacko 6.3.2 is using kernel 3.14.55.
This pet is for kernel 2.6.37.6

The graphic driver packages have to be made for a specific Linux kernel and will only work for that kernel.

PPM in Slacko 6.3.2 does not offer this driver 285.05.09
So, nobody has compiled and made this driver for this Slacko.

You will need to compile your own. The following link will tell you how to do it.

Your best option would be to follow this info:
Nvidia driver run package installing
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=110611

I would check with the Nvidia web site to make sure this is the latest driver that will work with your Nvidia hardware.
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

Not sure about the 285.05.09 driver, but I have had some older drivers not be able to compile for the newer Linux kernels. Linux has moved on and just does not have the needed support.
That is why I would make sure there is maybe a newer driver you could use.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

Your computer locking up.

If this is a fresh new install of Slacko 6.3.2
Bad download of the iso and or bad install.
Downloads and installs do not go correctly, sometimes.

Slacko is installed to what device?
Frugal or full install?
If frugal you are using a save?
The save has how much free space?
How much RAM does the computer have?
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

The downloaded iso md5 checks out. The install may be bad. I will get rid of it and reinstall.

This is a frugal install to a hard drive. I am using a save file with about 80% free.

The computer has 1814864kB of RAM.

I will hunt around for a newer driver, but compiling drivers is a bit beyond my experience!

There are a couple of nvidia drivers in the PPM. I don't know if either of them will work with my nvidia graphics card. I will load the newer one and see if I can make it work -- any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am way over my head in this nvidia mess.

You should find out what graphic card you have.
You can find that with Pup-sysinfo under System in the menu; choose Devices > Display.
Or with the command lspci in terminal; look for a line with vga or video.

The driver you mention is old. You better search a recent one.
With the info about your graphic card, you can search for a driver here:
https://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
My guess is that you will need the 304.xxx series.

You also need the right info about your kernel. You can find that also with Pup-sysinfo.

Best way to proceed is to compile.
But if you do not want to do that, look for your most recent fit (driver and kernel) in the repository for slacko 6.3.2:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... lacko14.1/
That may be this one: nvidia_old-304.128-3.14.55-i686.pet

If you do not find a match, let us know the info you acquired as above.

I will hunt around for a newer driver, but compiling drivers is a bit beyond my experience!

My previous post tells you exactly how to do it.
It is not that hard.
You just need to go slow and make sure you do everything one step at a time.
If you do something wrong it will tell you.
All that will happen is the driver never gets compiled correctly and is not used.

Use the link at Nvidia I posted.
That is there search engine for the correct driver for the hardware. Some drivers do not support specific hardware. So, you need to use the driver they say supports your hardware.

Another thing about your install of Slacko.
If the hard drive is formatted fat32 or ntfs.
Those formats can get fragmented.
Need to use Windows programs to check the hard drive partition and defrag the file system(format).
Run Windows chkdisk and defrag before installing Slacko.
If the format(file system) is fragmented. The install of Slacko will be fragmented and that can cause problems with how Slacko works.
The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

For the time being, I am using the nouveau driver that is included in slacko-6.3.2. It does a good enough job.

I don't have the time right now to learn a new trick.

Thanks for all your help.
