Washing your hands
Thanks perdido.
There's a map of the outbreak for Canada here.
Yeah, wash your hands.
Also, if you need to cough, cough in your elbow or in a Kleenex.

Returning for a moment to the original thread topic, some of us will remember when taps on hospital sinks were commonly fitted with long levers so that they could be operated by the users' elbows without hand contact.
Even many years before the current virus emergency, it has long vexed me that when I come in with filthy hands to wash I immediately transfer some of that filth to a standard tap control.
So, I have long intended, if I could ever get round to it, to fix up foot controls for just those circumstances.
I believe that such controls exist but are hard to find and extremely expensive. My own thoughts for a DIY fix are to use a pedal-operated Bowden-cable kind of setup using something like a "CIM" ball valve to replace the conventional tap, in order to avoid the complications of solenoid valves or extensive additional plumbing. However, the days when I could drop by and ask an expert to turn up the necessary valve-return spring in his lunch break are very long gone, so I'm stumped for now on that one.
Ideas, anyone?

Hi dogie.
I'm a low-tech type! So I can't really suggest an answer to your question.
But how about opening the tap putting some kind of protection: Kleenex, napkin, toilet
paper even -- between your hand and the tap?
These days I always carry with me a pack of on-the-go tissues. I find them very handy to
prevent me from direct contact with taps, grocery carts handles, doorknobs, and so on.
They come in sets of 8 packs of 10 tissues for +/- CAD$2.50 at Giant Tiger or Dollarama.
(Kleenex has them, but the No Name or lesser-known brands are a bit cheaper.)
Regards.

I think you can get long handle taps from disabled/old people suppliers.
I have some that are about half the length.
Also in the olden days taps and door handles were made of brass, but people don't like them nowadays because they do not look clean. In fact brass is actually self disinfecting so they will be biologically cleaner than stainless steel ones.

A few years back we installed a new Out house and bathroom.
These included [chosen by wife and me].
1. The bathroom sink has a tap that mixes mains-hot and storage-tank-cold [single outlet], with a single 3 inch tap-handle [smooth and sexy] that sits directly over the tap [for 50/50 mix].
You push it further left for more hot, and further right for more cold, up for more water, fully up for max, down for less, fully down for off.
This can be done with wrists or elbows.
No need to touch with fingers/hands.
2. The Out house tap is also a mixer, with large high loop up-over-and-down.
It has 2 taps, one each side, hot on the left, cold on the right.
The tap levers are about 2 inches long, vertical when off.
You can easily pull them forward with wrist to allow water out.
All the way down to horizontal is fully open.
No need to touch with fingers/hands.
The valve is ceramic, bearing against the outlet, and rotated by the lever, hence REALLY easy to rotate [it does drip VERY slowly][imperfect seal].
3. Our large bathroom cabinet, with large mirrors inside and out, and large vertical fluorescent lights at left and right...
Includes underneath-right a detector that switches the lights on and off when anything [hand] comes within 6 inches of it.
Hence...
No need to touch with fingers/hands.

Our Out house tap (In my home) is a bit like that but after checking, reaching it with an elbow is not going to happen. Like your case, it would be a wrist. Unfortunately wrists can become contaminated. Fortunately the only people here is my wife and myself and so far neither has COVID-19 and we intend to keep it that way through fairly extreme levels of isolation.Sylvander wrote:

I have worked for nearly 2 weeks from home. Some moving things around will be needed if I am to do a lot more of this. Here is basically how it goes:
I have a tablet with the "microsoft teams" app installed over to my right. In front of me is the keyboard and display of my desktop with Puppy-528 on it.
(teams didn't run under wine)
One virtual desktop of Puppy has my work email and perhaps a PDF of some document like a data sheet.
The 2nd virtual desktop has LTSpice running under wine and a gnumeric spreadsheet. A lot of the cells in the spreadsheet have something like "=1/(2*pi()*3.32E3*220E-12)" entered into it.
The moving stuff is mostly to get the distance to the tablet and the distance to the monitor the same so eyes focused on one are also focused on the other.
Fairly soon the virtual desktop #1 will grow a PCB layout program running on it as I start to go to PCB.
Hello all.
I just read this on French-Canadian media TVA.
American buyers are "stealing" masks produced for French medical personnel.
I could find no report of the event in the English-speaking media, so here's a
DeepL translation.
Of grave concern, I'd say.
Regards

The masks ordered in China by France are bought by the Americans on the tarmac of
Chinese airports before the departure of the delivery planes, deplored Wednesday Jean
Rottner, president of the French region of the Great East, particularly affected by the
coronavirus epidemic.
"On the tarmac, the Americans take out the 'cash' and pay three or four times the
orders we made, so we really have to fight," Rottner told RTL radio, explaining that the
planes then fly to the United States and no longer to France.
"It's complicated, we fight 24 hours a day" to get the masks delivered, he said, indicating
that he has set up a "dedicated" cell in his region to "win these markets".
The president of the PACA region (south-east), Renaud Muselier, had also complained
on Tuesday of such a practice on the part of American buyers.
Two million surgical masks ordered by the Grand Est region to China were delivered
during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.
"I was very pleased to see this plane arrive here last night," Rottner said.
The Far East was the first region to receive its own order for masks to complement
national orders.
Emmanuel Macron, who has been criticised for the lack of masks facing France,
promised on Tuesday "full and complete independence" by the end of the year for the
production of masks, during a visit to a manufacturing plant.
The United States, which has been slow to take measures to stop the spread of the
coronavirus on its territory, is also looking for masks.

Just a note to all who are using nitrile gloves...
WASH THEM AFTER USE, AND RE-USE.
Find some good dish-soap like Ajax, Palmolive, Dawn, Store-brand, whatever. About 3 small drops is all you need. Rinse well after wash, and air-dry.

more than it seems
The entire planet is experiencing strange phenomena along with the coronavirus. From March to April 2020 it has been recorded:
1) noise from the sky (hum) in many parts of the world.
2) number of UFO sightings related to those noises. Several of these were filmed.
3) simultaneous ignition of 15 volcanoes.
4) sudden disappearance of sunspots during a week.
5) Earth's magnetosphere going crazy for an entire day.
6) Finally, it seems that part of the planet's core mass has also leaked.
There are records that show all these things happened, and even if only half of them did, it would be reason enough to realize that this coronavirus thing is not just an isolated or random phenomenon.

Now that would make an interesting movie plot.
Yeah got people who have done the same here for example one person infected going to a Supermarket.Smithy wrote:Ajax? I think that's like for scouring baths and cleaning floors.
I've got some Vim and that would rip yer skin off.

Noises coming from the sky around the world are even accepted by NASA. But this time I won't be looking for more references, please do it yourself if you're interested about the topic, it's easy you only have to use Google.musher0 wrote: At least you're honest! @musher0 - if you choose not to investigate natural phenomena and instead prefer to wait for the happy clappy propagandists to feed you the sanitised "truth" that you want to believe then you should not criticise others who have enquiring minds.
There is no science without investigation.
There is no investigation without curiosity.
There is no curiosity without intelligence.
In case you missed it - the interglacial period is ending.
Why?
You would have no idea why, and simply would not care.
C'est la vie.
