Need to install Wine 0.9.8 .pup
Hey puppies,
I need help with installing WINE version 0.9.8 on my Puppy Linux system. It needs to be that specific version because of a bug that occurs because of WINE and my video card's lack of OpenGL. I'm trying to run Starcraft in Puppy, and this WINE version will let me do it.
I need someone's help in installing this. I have really no idea where to start.
Thank you.

No, sorry, I guess I wasn't being clear. I actually need a WINE dotpup of that version (0.9.. There are, however, several dotpups of WINE around (for different versions). Go here.Runemaster wrote:You have a .pup of wine I had to compile it and it gets stuck during that process. so plz provide a link or something, your efforts are appreciated in advanced.

Ok, I got it, those .bin files were pissin me off so i looked it up, turns out your have to run them in xterm. 1. go to the wine file with rox and right click and go to 'window'->'terminal here' . Then type this in....
The first line will modify the attributes and make it executable, the second line will then in turn execute the file. That should be it, you can do that with any other .bin file as well.
Code: Select all
chmod +x path-to-file/wine 0.9.8.bin
path-to-file/wine 0.9.8.bin

or right click on the file ,change the properties to executeablechmod +x path-to-file/wine 0.9.8.bin
path-to-file/wine 0.9.8.bin
then left click on it or open a terminal type the path and name in
Also your reference to a download site shows a dot pup for wine 9.28 without openGL ,would this not suite you?

Alright, I installed WINE 0.9.28, and it works. I guess they fixed the bug. Oddly enough, it was the version that had OpenGL that worked, not the one without it.
Now I have another question: What are some good ways to get WINE to run faster? I would say SC runs at about 80-85% speed. Is there any way to disable sound, or to lower the resolution?
Thanks for the help.

playing slow StarCraft with Puppy 2.16 and Wine 0.9.28
I followed the link above (where it says "here") and downloaded the wine dotpup. I have succesfully given my puppy wine, and I am drunk with joy. Thanks, sphetr2!
Here is the step-by-step for anyone interested.
Download the wine dotpup from the aforementioned site in Denmark, http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Emulators/
Click yes to unzip and yes to install it.
(then keep or delete the dotpup as you please)
After install completes, reboot puppy.
Then in a terminal window, type winecfg
Get Wine to recognize the drive where StarCraft is installed as "C:",
and get the cd drive recognized as "D:"
Insert the StarCraft CD
Then click on the 'drives' icon on Puppy's desktop.
Mount the StarCraft CD
Go back to the console window
Navigate to StarCraft's installation directory... example: cd /mnt/hda1/games/StarCraft
type in wine StarCraft.exe
It pukes errors all over my terminal window and then starts a slow, playable session of StarCraft.
Maybe some powerful and wise person will want to look at those errors. Here they are:
Remember, despite these errors, it WORKS! I tried installing StarCraft on a FAT formatted drive (instead of NTFS) and it seemed a ~little~ faster. Also turning off sound and music speeds the game up.
Thank you, everyone for making my GNU/Linux experience so pleasurable.
