No internet Sub_title: realtek RTL 8139/810x family Fast Ethernet NIC / Puppy 2.17.1-nozlma-seamonkey |
|
Hello everybody,
I'm new with Puppy but really enjoy it.
I have a problem with my internet connection and can not connect...
I'm using puppy 2.17.1
My hardware is realtek RTL 8139/810x family Fast Ethernet NIC.
I used the wizard that found the driver 8139too. (I also tried others with the automatic recognization procedure but no better results)
It recognized the ethernet port.
Everything looks excellent and successful.
But, when I open the browser, there is no connection.
I'm sorry if this problem has already been resolved but I could not find anything on the net nor on the forum (but somebody that had a similar 8139 but on a PCMCIA).
I'm a very very beginner with linux so it is very hard to find how to check or resolve my issue.
Thank you for your support

no internet connection |

hello everybody,
I tried another mini distro called feather.
It recognized the internet right out of the box.
Maybe I can import some of the settings in this distro to make it work in puppy ?
As I stated, I'm a very very beginner in linux so I don't known if I'm saying stupid things and how to do them...
Thanks for any help,
cheers,
Dam

did you hit the dhcp button in the wizard after loading the module
after trying to set it up what output do you get in a console for
ifconfig
cat /etc/resolv.conf
route

Can you try to boot from Puppy 2.16 and run the network wizard again and see if it works?
I'm not sure but I think I read about a network problem with Puppy 2.17.x...
The driver you are selecting seems to be the right one. Is the one I use and works fine with me.

thank you hairywill and T_hobbit,
I hit dhcp button each time I tried to connect but it was a failure, though everything went very smooth. I'm about to try to send report from if config. Just to be sure, I open the console, write if config, press enter, then write the cat/etc/resolv.conf (sorry, I'm really a fully beginner).
I'm also downloading the previous version 2.16.1, and will give it a try.
I will psot in a few hours,
cheers,
Dam

no internet [partialy resolved] Sub_title: realtek rtl 8139/810x family fast ethernet nic / puppy 2.17.1 |
|
there are two solutions I believe :
the first one, thanks to T_Hobbit is to downgrade to puppy version 2.16
this works ! but at the same time, I guess it is a bug in the 2.17.x versions.
the second one, proposed by HairyWill, can not be yet found because of my incompetence : I wrote in the console, if config, hit enter, then wrote cat/etc/resolv.conf
but nothing happened. It is my lack of knowledge or the fact that I run a live CD version.
cheers,
and thanks,

The right expressions are:
ifconfig (all together)
cat /etc/resolv.conf ( with a space)
I read another post about a network wizard bug... Don't remember which post, but search network AND wizzard AND 2.17 and you'll find it for sure...

no internet Sub_title: bug reported for 2.17 |

I looked around with the description you gave T_hobbit, and I found the following post.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=2058850093&t=20870
exactly the same problem. downgrading to 2.16 looks like the immediate solution for beginners right now.
my ifconfig report is as follow :
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:46:CF:00:C1
inet addr:169.254.137.153 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0

TX packets:25 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1620 (1.5 KiB) TX bytes:5730 (5.5 KiB)
Interrupt:3 Base address:0xec00
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:16 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:1152 (1.1 KiB) TX bytes:1152 (1.1 KiB)
I send this also to the bug report.
I did not obtain anything form cat/etc/resolv.conf
(oh, ok I just got I might need to write 'route' just after...)
Cheers,
DAM
