Barry has just released his 4.3.1rc and it includes a nice little app called Partview which polls all the drives/partitions whether mounted or not, (it mounts them temporarily if they aren't) and gives a display of used and available space. Apparently it was in puppys prior to 4.0

I thought this was the same as the partview in your 214X but it seems rather different. Any chance this could be included in 214X? Not sure how the clash of naming would be sorted? I'd find it particularly useful.

If it's too much bother I fully understand.

Cheers
Dave
I wonder if its like my ttuuxxxview, hmmm I made a simple app a couple years back, I even included in 4.2 :)

when you install it, you'll find a menu item under system
ps love the size ,lol

hi dave with cups, I think I have most of your fixes included, but I found a better way that works, and users can easily remove it. make a simple script like
#!/bin/sh
exec /etc/init.d/cups restart

named it cups-starter and toss it into startup
restart-x server and away you go, no extra changes, links etc needed.

TTUUXXX:

Good morning here, think evening your time :) Glad you survived the week.. let me tell you... older you get more recovery time for being inactive....:))).

No problem leaving driver the same for zd1211rw.... I know how to fix my issue.. I kind of figure that is a popular module... and tons? of others may encounter the problem. If I can speak out of turn... "tempestuous" is the one to ask on what or how to remove just the zd1211 or black list it...etc.... Wish I understood more of how this works..... slowly learning...

As I said for me problem solved. YOU have quite an accomplishment here.. I think that it will be used a ton..... please change the license plate to indicate the VERSION number.....:)))))... (or include your routine to change the start button to the version number Please)

As has been mentioned many times.... with literally dozens of versions of Puppy in the works... it is hard to be sure what version is what....:).

Any luck so far on diagnosis of hardware problems??? What is it doing? I am sure it can't be as simple as loose video cable? You mentioned LCD possibly acting up.. can you switch displays? Don't know about in Australia.. but prices dropping on new LCD panels... small ones.. are downright inexpensive.

Here is an early note from tempestuous on zd12111rw....not sure it answers what has to be unloaded or if the pet has the code to make zd1211rw priority? 430 series loads the correct version if that helps?

Again.. thanks for all your hard work..it is appreciated! Hope they are paying you well for your construction work!!!

Zydas ZD1211 wifi devices
Puppy versions 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, 2.15CE, 2.16
contain the opensource zd1211rw driver.
But apparently there is a more recent B version of the Zydas chipset which is not supported by this driver, at least in early kernels, anyway.
So Puppy versions 214R and 214X
contain the zd1211 and zd1211b "Vendor-based community drivers" instead.

The situation becomes more complex, though, since it seems there are some variants of the Zydas chipset ...
possibly the versions released after Atheros bought out Zydas and renamed the chipset "AR5007UG" ...
which won't work with the vendor driver.
So here is the (normal) opensource zd1211rw driver

Once installed, there will now be 2 drivers trying to claim the same device, it may be necessary to unload the one you don't want, before loading the one you do want, like this -
Code:
rmmod zd1211b
modprobe zd1211rw
Now it will be necessary to run the Network Wizard.
Updated with core wifi (ieee80211) modules, July 30 2009.

Thanks ttuuxxx, It´s running fine for me, very fast and low memory consumption.

Some little things found:
  • TighVNC client is present but the shortcut entry is lost in: Menu - Network.
Skins for BMP are in sub-directories, they should be .zip or wsz compressed files.
In background setter When I use "Reload" or "change folder" the application is closed instead.
Greetings,
clarf

Hi ttuuxxx,

Full install worked perfect.

Refresh Menu needs to be clicked to show CD/DVD Ripping/Tools icon.

MHHP's fix needed for the keyboard wizard (Advanced Xorg button). i.e. /usr/local/apps/XkbConfigurationManager/XkbLayoutConfig line 35 change to:

if [ "$CHANGE" = "" ];then # MHHP

this puts back the change/add layout option.

well guys so far I'm impressed, just a few minor bugs reported so far, really nothing all that bad, which is good, I bet I just talked too soon
I'll give it to the weekend and then make a RC release, well if not any surprises happen meanwhile  I'm looking forward to 2.20 and also helping out with dpup if its needed, gposil is pretty handy with linux.

Just had a quick look at version 214X15:

Well this is definitely a big improvement and I agree it's got to be close to an RC release. Just a few points:

1. ttuuxxx you still need to add the symlink to enable printing to a remotely connected windows PC.

Code: Select all

  ln -s /opt/samba/bin/smbspool /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb
please see http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... start=2141

2. I agree the simple script in /root/Startup is fine for launching the cups daemon after bootup. I did similar myself earlier on but then I saw what BK had done in 430 and assumed there was more to it than I understood. Apparently not. I am all for keeping it simple.

3. I have 7 sfs files running together at the moment, but I noticed that there is a max of 5 unless I add

Code: Select all

max_loop=20
to the kernel line of my grub stanza.

Could clarf or yourself let me know what's the prefered and max numbers I can type here.

It might be helpful to add this info to the Welcome page for new-comers and those who haven't read all 147 pages (and rising) of this thread. :-)

4. I noticed you haven't put in mrxvt which you mentioned recently. It is nice to have as it has the tabs. But I can just add it with the pet and adjust the menu/launch settings to make it over-ride rxvt.

5. OlddogNewtricks suggests adding MHHP's keyboard mod
MHHP's fix needed for the keyboard wizard (Advanced Xorg button). i.e. /usr/local/apps/XkbConfigurationManager/XkbLayoutConfig line 35 change to:

if [ "$CHANGE" = "" ];then # MHHP

this puts back the change/add layout option.
.
Well I tried it and managed to get the 30 second delay on boot again (using UK and CA keyboards), which I believe was the reason that you didn't include it. However it is a nice feature for those who need dual or multi-language keyboards and I did get it working with UK and FR keybds.

So perhaps a Pet could be a compromise if you don't feel like including it as standard???

6. As I said before I really like your SuperSwitcher. A very useful feature. However if it's necessary to kill an app then the superswitcher is no more and a restart of the xserver is necessary to start it back again.

Unfortunatley I have had to kill several apps in 214X so it's not something that will hardly ever happen. Any chance having a look at that or is it a fundamental issue??

7. Many thanks for pdf printing in pdfviewer. Works great.

8. ttuuxxx I am very grateful that you added the timer-Gstpw. It is neat and will come in useful. Unfortunately I was asking for a Count-down timer. ie one that will let me set it for say 30 minutes and then tell me when that is reached. Good for auctions, deadlines, cooking etc. etc.
8. Not sure why Timer got removed but I often use a Count-down app. Any chance of adding something else?
It doesn't seem that Gstpw will do that. I did have a look on the web just now and so far all the supposedly linux count-down timers seem to be for Windows!! I'm amazed that something so useful and simple seems to be unavailable. Such is the internet.

9. I'll write a separate note on Partview as it seems there might be some confusion there.

So, 214x15 is without doubt the best so far and as I say I guess it's about time for an RC.

Thanks as ever
Dave

EDIT:
Yes I've got the same closing Background Setter as clarf.

I do editing as part of my business and would be happy to take inputs on procedure from those that have done tweaks or have procedures to do certain things and compile / edit them.

I'm having a hugely hard time finding time to do initial writing but I'll be happy to edit inputs if it will help.

partview

#2197 Post by davesurrey »

Earlier on I mentioned Barry's Partview in his Pup4.3.1rc .
Please see http://puppylinux.com/blog/?page=3 3rd item.

It seems to be different, giving different info, from the partview that was in 214X up until version12? and which ttuuxxx has just replaced with ttuuxxxview.

I hope the pics below explain this and clarify the one that I would be very keen to be included in 214X. ie the Barry one.

Well the "secret" of adding a symlink and then using a simple startup script for Cups, if it doesn't auto-start, is actually included on the first page of rcrsn51's thread in the Printer section.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 52&t=29208

As ever it's merely a question of finding it amongst the other 346823 articles!!!!!

Hi dave. the 30 second boot delay was caused by no gb.gz in /lib/keymaps which ttuuxxx has now fixed & seems fine to me.

MHHP's fix for the Advanced Xorg button, replaces the option to either change your default keyboard layout from US to something else or add another to it. Without it you can only add another layout so you end up with a tray icon with which you can switch between layouts, but will always default to US. This is how it is in the original keyboard setter.

Yes, superswitcher dies if you kill something from the taskbar or the window menu bar(both bring up that irritating confirm window), but not if you use KP from the menu. It can be restarted by clicking on superswitcher in /root/startup, no X restart needed
Plus one of the small windows must be clicked on first-time-use to activate it. If you use keyboard arrows first it will crash & need restarting.
Handy once you've learnt its faults.
