I still think the init script in initrd.gz has to be adapted as well.
Three statements to change from ext2 to ext3.
PUPSAVE='sdb7,ext2,/quirkysave-R40_quirky_18.3fs'
...ext2 refers to the filesystem of the sdb7 partition.
