Slitaz 3.0 is almost as good as Puppy? Multi user even!

#1 Post by nooby »

Slitaz only have 35MB iso but is bigger if one gives it same apps as puppy have but the good thing is that it is Multi user and it allows one to be root and almost can do all that puppy do but one need to do sudo and such.
Here is my frugal install to ntfs hdd for grub4dos
Code:

Code: Select all

title SliTaz cooking
  kernel (hd0,2)/slitaz3boot/bzImage rw root=/dev/null slitaz vga=771 nosmp acpi=off
  initrd (hd0,2)/slitaz3boot/rootfs.gz
Now looking it up on DistroWatch is way low on the lost compared to Puppy so puppy must be doing something right being compared that favorably ?

gives it same apps as puppy
I think Puppy is very much a complete out of the box experience
and systems such as DSL (or Tinycore) and even some of the bigdogs
are unusable until configured, pampered and bloated further.
I liked Slitaz but have no use for it.

Usability is the key 8)

Yes but if there where no Puppy anywhere to dl or even thought of?
Slitaz is easier to use than TinyCore.

Sure you have to add things to Slitaz too but on TinyCore there is almost nothing from scratch. No Seamonkey even :)

So what is lacking in Slitaz? Don't them have a big repo?

Hopefully Pussy can get even better than what Slitaz is now?

I am not sure what really goes on. I don't dare to join their forum and ask.

My experiences of joining other forums like LinuxQuestions and other specific Linux distros forum is that them only tell me to read the Wikka or FAQ or some other text that are on a level I don't get a word from.

So what has happen. From not even allowing to look at the ntfs hdd them now
allow one to not only play music and look at pics and read texts on it them even allow me to save things on the hdd.

That is something that not even AntiX allow!!!

So Slitaz is really an exceptions. It is unique! But sadly one have to install a lot of programs and I fail to do such. Have no idea how one set up the Firewall or the save function and install viewnior or mplayer or vlc or ...

So despite it is the only thing apart from puppy that just works I have no idea how to get it going. okay it boots frugally but it needs programs I miss that already work in Puppy.

Slitaz is an interesting little distro to play with but not for any serious use.I keep an up-to-date Slitaz install to experiment with but by the time enough applications, drivers, etc. are added to make it useful it's bigger than Puppy.
Same with Tiny Core,an interesting little programming exercise but nowhere near as useful as Puppy.
Just my personal opinion.

Thanks James,

I guess it has to do with me not even knowing what being serious is about. :)

I agree though that if one add things to both of them then them get even bigger than Puppy at times. Due to Puppy shaving off a lot.

But the "good" thing about TCL and Slitaz is that the "Real Linux" users recognize the multi user approach and not get hysterical about being root.

Them don't have to be that in the other small distros.

I tried to be Fido in Slacko and it was not easy. So obviously I need something that makes it easy to shift between being Admin and User.

Sudo I fail to get what it is. I've read and read but I am not on that level.
One need to be structured in brain and remember what the OS and programs expect one to do about permissions and such.

We are all spoiled by Puppy and the ease of doing things without having to sudo this and that or su root as we are already running as root.

Sometimes, the ease of doing things in Puppy is understanding how to do what you want.
I have used Puppy through a number of versions and I still am discovering things I never knew existed.
Also, since Puppy is so easy to install if you break something, it does not take much to recover.
I think the most important thing a person can do for recovery is to have a backup of your pupsave file.
That way, if you trash your Puppy, you can just boot with pfix=ram, delete your bad pupsave, and copy over the backup. Reboot and you are good to go.

Thanks 8-bit. Yes interesting new things in puppy too and sure
I am very spoiled here. I do admit that.

Hi there Lobster. Yes I am testing Racy Wary now and will test Slacko B3
within some 30 minutes or so I have downloaded the iso.

And Drake I did test too and Dpup xprimo and Polar puppy and I am at it :)

Lobster tell me when I can test Pussy, that seems interesting.

Slitaz is one of the few spiders I will check out now and then. :)

Haha I even tested Bodhi and installed it first frugal on hdd but
that was not a good thing it refused to let me say so now it is on an usb and that allow it to use the hdd and save on the usb insted
but I ahve not set up a casper-rw for it yet. I am too lazy.

And what was the name of that new Debian. Illume a bit big 900MB
But that one worked too. So now I only long for Pussy to become what Sickgut had the goal to accomplish. That one look promising.

And iguleder love to do his experiments. Next is the next thing :)

installing apps in slitaz is easy. use the package manager on the taskbar, "refresh" the app list, then pick your applications. the package manager will download the files, including libs and dependencies if you ticked the checkbox, and then install. give the app a test drive, and if you like it, save the rootfs.gz when you logout. previous rootfs will be saved with time/date and if you want to boot with the last version, put "previous" on the bootcode.

tikbalang thanks. How does one do this

Edit I am in slitaz now and will llok for what you told me there.
rootfs.gz saving? Maybe I should look for Help or something :)
or on their forum but I don't want to join because often forums only tell me
to do the "Read the Manual thing" and that fails for me. I am too stupid to get such text.

Not sure what to do. When I clicked the package manager then it disappeared.

When I do the above it give this error. Most likely due to me installed it on the ntfs hdd? It maybe don't feel at home there?

I want to install a picture viewer and a media player. How does one do such things then?

And I want to save it in a save file on the hdd. Where does one tell it to do such things?

and I want to activate the iptables firewall to have same settings as it has on puppy.

Their doc says
[quote]Manage the Firewall (firewall) using Iptables
SliTaz provides a very basic firewall, the kernel security rules are launched at boot time and iptables rules are disabled by default. You can activate/disable these at startup by using the configuration file /etc/firewall.conf.

The default firewall script begins with its own set options for the Kernel ie. ICMP redirects, source routing, logs for unresolved addresses and spoof filters. The script then launches the rules defined in the iptables_rules() function of the configuration file: /etc/firewall.conf.

The firewall uses Iptables, it consists of two files: /etc/firewall.conf and /etc/init.d/firewall, you shouldn't need to modify these. Note Iptables has lots of options. For more infomation see the official documentation available online: http://www.netfilter.org/documentation/.

Start, stop, restart the firewall

The script /etc/init.d/firewall lets you start/restart, stop or display the status of the firewall. The restart option is often used to test new rules after editing the configuration file. Example:

# /etc/init.d/firewall restart
Enable/Disable the firewall at boot

To enable/disable options specific to the Kernel place “yes

Haha Slitaz tells me that I have not given it the
i915 module. I guess it has to do with Intel 945 chips and them
use i915 graphics. So one need that module on the kernel line at boot maybe?

I still fail to see that rootfs.gz thing "save the rootfs when you log out"
I wonder how one does that?

Still need to install the pic viewer and the mediaplayer I guess I need to get the package thing going. Have no idea how

Edit, I sure have a rootfs.gz in slitaz3boot so maybe one should have that one on root instead and then it will be seen automatically?
Or does one have to put a boot code that says persistent or something?

The iso and os see itself is CDROM now dispite it is booted from the internal hdd. So that maybe complicate things?

initrd /boot/rootfs.gz
home=4039-E1EC -- you need to specify "home=" with UUID of partition. get uuid by issuing "blkid" at the terminal.

there is a paint and image viewer included. just double-click the image files.

i rarely use the taz tools to manage slitaz. the package manager and control box can do most of the maintenance work. it's right next to the clock on the task tray.

for media player, i suggest smplayer. in package manager, recharge lists, sort according to preference, then doubleclick on package name. check "auto install dependencies" then click install if you want it.

oops I am a poor reader of text.
this is what is missing home=
but what about the thing you wrote about "previous"

Should one write the word previous on the kernel line. You don't have it as I can see :)

ooops again. This part makes me wonder

find --set-root --ignore-floppies /slitaz/slitazx.lst

the ending slitazx.lst does that point to what? is there such a file in isolinux maybe. What exactly does that one do?

use "blkid" at the terminal to get the UUID value for your partition.

when saving rootfs, old rootfs.gz becomes "previous.gz", "<date>.gz". use "previous" bootcode only if you want to revert back to old settings.

that is my own configfile.

Thanks for caring about me but all this are too new to me. Sp much to learn.

If I log in as tux then it remember bookmarks after a reboot.
If I log in as root then it does not remember bookmarks after a reboot.
But neither of them remember Flash installed to Midori.

So obviously something goes very wrong. I guess it has to do with being a live distro. It sees my hdd as a CDROM and not as a media to put something persistent on.

I also wonder about this odd thing in the boot code.

Code: Select all

title SliTaz cooking " TYPE="ntfs"
  kernel (hd0,2)/slitaz3boot/bzImage rw root=/dev/null slitaz persistent home="xxxxxxx" TYPE="ntfs" vga=771 nosmp
  initrd (hd0,2)/slitaz3boot/rootfs.gz

initrd (hd0,2)/slitaz3boot/rootfs.gz

why should it not have the linuz thing there? vmlinuz-2.6.37-slitaz

which also is there in the boot directory? Maybe it uses it anyway?

It does not create a previous file.

Maybe I need this?
modprobe=i915
it does give a warning. Missing module i915

SliTaz is nice when everything works, but try getting support when your graphics card doesn't work. Post an issue/problem on the forum and see how long it takes for someone to respond. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
