Here you go guys
Compiz!!!
UPDATE to the compiz-helper pet HERE! 111227
http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/slacko/ ... -0.8.8.sfs 30M
md5sum compiz-slacko-0.8.8.sfs
18207ca5e34802fd0578b846682cfcee compiz-slacko-0.8.8.sfs
It includes everything you need, python, plugins, emerald, ccsm and lxpanel.
You need to get the attached "compiz-helper" pet to
1) test your system is capable
2) setup ~/.xinitrc with some vars and calls to compiz/emerald/lxpanel
3) adjust /etc/profile
Your xorg.conf *should* be just fine.. don't touch it
NOTES:
Please run the attachment! It probes your system for vital tid bits. Needless to say you need your accelerated video driver, works with Mesa on Intel and old Radeon, with nvidia driver on Nvidias and fglrx on new Radeons, i don't have a clue about obscure cards, but if you get a decent glxgears number and the test is passed then you are good.
In the xinitrc an attempt is made to see if you use Hardware or Software acceleration and appropriate variables set.
There is no extra wm included (emerald takes care of it) and there is a panel in the shape of lxpanel, bare bones. You can use xfce4 or trinity-KDE and if you're game KDE4. (More on these options later).
You invoke it from console (outside of X) with xwin dummy
I made it an sfs coz it's big! And it wont make a mess if you decide to toss it out.
It is tested working on my main fast system with nvidia and fglrx, my crappy eee-701-SD (NO bull!) and my r51 thinkpad with old radeon-mobility 32M graphics. that's 4! Hmm.. I wonder how the olpc-XO-1.5 will go?
Known issues:
-there is a little square in the top left corner, it's a window of rxvt, it's the "dummy" wm
-X doesn't close cleanly on some systems, you may need to hard poweroff, but I haven't had to yet, acpid usually cuts in.
-DO NOT use this on servers or where uptime is critical, says that too on the compiz site
Many thanks to dinky (creator of Ripple) for the rxvt idea, the crunch bang guys for ideas to run W/O a wm, the compiz guys, Forlong, for the compiz-check script (hacked for root access).
Have fun!

ran the fixer
(nice banana . . .)
OK I got three out of four errors
. . . so I added the Mesa GLX from Slickpet (under drivers)
OK now only have one error out of four
Next ran 'xwin startxfce4' from the prompt after adding xfce
and still looking for some wobble or evidence that Compiz is on the system . . .
. . . am I nearly there? Anyone else get those Compiz effects?
Thanks Mick. Thanks guys.

Hi
click on image for full-sized version.
Although everything appears to be working,
there is a slight issue with windows occasionally becoming inactive.
Maybe it is something to do with my setup, i don't honestly know,
i'll have to do some more testing.
Anyway, thank you very much Mick for the early Xmas pressie.

Good news, my minimalistic packages repository becomes bigger and bigger as you can see here
My plan is to upload all the new packages today and tomorrow. These include Conky, Angband, bs (a Battleships clone), a wallpapers pack, stalonetray (a standalone system tray), man-pages (man pages for the Linux and glibc API, a must-have for C development), fbshot (a framebuffer screenshot capture tool), imlib2_grab (a screenshot capturing tool included in imlib2), hsetroot (a powerful wallpaper setting tool) and Aspell. And of course, all the snapshot packages (libav, mplayer and cwm) are automatically updated, too.
I hope I'll be able to produce an automatically-built and self-contained Slacko puplet with all these goodies soon

Ahem.. I should have added that to "known issues"CatDude wrote:Although everything appears to be working,

When you minimise the rxvt dummy window, windows and lxpanel become unresponsive. Looking for a better way...

Looking forth to that!Iguleder wrote:I hope I'll be able to produce an automatically-built and self-contained Slacko puplet with all these goodies soon

OK I am at 0 errors nowYou need 0 out of 4 errors Lob.
there was a conflict with the ati_fglrx driver/lib
This may have installed with xfce.
I un-installed it - assuming it would be in the compiz slacko SFS
Now I can run the 'xwin dummy' but the programs all appear in top left and I can not resize or move . . .
Also the compiz animation comes up - so nearly there
If I type xwin JWM I get the compiz configuation manager from the menu in desktop but only have one window and no wobble
Many thanks

Uploading the rebuilt repository, it's here. The packages are installed in /opt, with the menu entries and icons in the regular locations under /usr, so they appear in the menu.
There are many new applications, they include some nice games, improvements for existing packages, some updates (libav, mplayer2 and rxvt-unicode), xcowsay and a nice tile wallpapers pack.
Have fun!

See the known issues.
I do have to package up a pet for xfce, slacko comliant. You can use the one in the PPM from the Slackware repo, but the menus are not Puppy compliant. You can also try the Trinity sfs instead.

jpeps, I think my basic instructions in the compiz-helper are at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to one Miss NixiPixil!

Umm ... sad news. The packages are horrible.
For some reason the new rxvt-unicode refuses to run applications through "-e". I have no idea why. Also, it seems the Terminus font is not recognized for some reason ... and Conky behaves differently for some unknown reason. I did a first build of my puplet and it's totally messed up.
I'll investigate this chaos tomorrow.

true...I didn't see anything regarding the "Trifectos Power" in compiz-helper. I'm still not sure what it is...maybe a reference to:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... ng%20power
Other searches yield:
Trifecta is always a great word to know.
So is ninnyhammer. Does it mean:
a fool or simpleton; ninny.
a chattering or flighty, light-headed person.

Yeah baby
Guys, I like a bit of wobble and spinning special effects but the big thing for me was being able to use Openshot 1.4 in Slacko.Snap of my thinkpad r51 trinity, compiz
I will get those special effects too soon enough.
Slacko is maturing, just as Lucid did.
Sad to hear igus mass compile did not work out . . . maybe it can be solved . . .
Good job! We are not a Debian, Ubuntu or Slackware clone,
We are a feisty little mongrel.
Woof woof.
I should start another thread for the compiz biz.. I want to build a record of systems that are running it successfully, CPU, graphics card and driver, RAM etc. .. so until I do, can you post those specs.
Puppy Linux Blog - contact me for access
I have a 10 year old Toshiba Satellite Laptop 1.8ghz 512megs ram Slacko loading from USB flash drive.
I just installed Compiz on it and it is very speedy with good graphics and no flashing or studder.
So that is getting down toward the low end of the scale as to computers.
I currently have Seamonkey, AbiWord, and a terminal open with free displaying memory usage as well as the boot desktop with rxvt.
My free on this PC, still speedy, is:
# free
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 497644 480224 17420 0 32044
Swap: 1052376 3096 1049280
Total: 1550020 483320 1066700
#
Now that is pretty impressive.
I dare someone with Windows to show me any desktop graphic effects even close to being comparable.
It would come up with some lame graphics rating that would say I would have to upgrade my PC to some unreal specs.

Well done Mick.
Works fine and fast on my EeePc900.
Even the camera in Skype works.
OK, some small issues, but not so important. The basics are working.
As I mentioned often during the years, if the Super key isn't working, use keyboard model pc-104 or 105 instead of pc-102 (could happen with non english keyboard layouts).
I tried to use simple-ccsm. Installed flawless witout missing dependencies, but fails to run. See attachment, please.
The mesa driver seems to be a little bit problematic for me (also without compiz).
Glxgears runs with ~300 fp5s and there seems to be a lot of sand between the gears. A little bit forward, a little bit backward, forward, backward... .
With xorg high in lupu-525 I get ~1500 fp5s.
On my Gericom laptop (see sig.) no go with Compiz.
Glxgears run with ~620 fp5s (gears turning fine).
With xorg high in lupu-525 I get ~3500 fp5s.
Attached output of compiz-check.
Any idea?
For my Eee it's like a christmas gift. Thank you.
Rolf

Raspberry Pi without Puppy? No, thanks.

Hi Rolf
Well 1 out of 2 isn't too bad.
I want you to try something with the Gericom. Copy your Lupu xorg.conf over Slacko's. Restart X. Try the test again. If the test passes then try compiz.
I will have to see if simple cssm works in my Slackware installation. I couldn't get it to work with (IIRC) similar errors to what you post in Slacko. I didn't bother chasing it too hard.
Good luck, and Merry Christmas.
