Slow working PC

#1 Post by Tui »

I have got this HP 6318 to try and speed up performance for
a friend.
I have put 256 meg of ram onboard and got 512 meg swap file.

This machine has I think a 300 mhz CPU. What version of
Puppy could I get to run and looks fast ?

Or is this machine off to the skip ?

Cheers

How do you know you have got a 512MB swap file if you haven't run Puppy yet?

If the Swap file is the Windows swap file then be aware the Puppy will need its own swap file.

With old machines the the Official Puppy to try is Wary. If that works and you are happy then great. If it doesn't then I am sure others will be along with the personal favourites soon!

The PC specs can be found here:

I would suggest Wary 5.3 which can be found here:
http://puppylinux.org/main/Long-Term-Su ... yPuppy.htm

If that fails ask your friend to put it back in the skip where he found it
Seriously if the hard disc checks out it should work fine.

Thanks for reply guys.

Re swap, the h/d is a 20gb one and has MSWINS98,
so I ran a GNOME CD with all the stuff to reduce wins,
take 8gb off and and create ext3 finish of with a 512mb swap
part. - thats' what I got now.

So ready to load a fast puppy

Thanks

It depends what your friend wants to do with the computer. Emails, light web browsing and word processing - fine. Youtube - probably not. Although if it has hardware graphics acceleration at the screen resolution you run it at then it could probably play the videos that aren't high resolution fine if you downloaded them first, or used something like Smtube.

I ran Puppy for years on a laptop with lower specs than that.
It was funny because I got special permission to do what is now called BYOD before PCs became so widespread.
I ran 3270 emulation software on it to access the mainframe and during the periods of power cuts I was the only person who could access the mainframe outside the computer room (that was on an emergency generator) which reminds me of a real facepalm.

The computer block was on these emergency generators that were tested and run weekly. When it came to the real power cut, they didn't start.

Why, because the starter motors were powered from ------ the mains.
I saved the day because I knew a local electrical contractor that had a portable generator with sufficient power to start the main generators.

If Wary is too heavy, try this:
Classic Pup 2.14X -- Updated 2 series
Always updated; built with older kernel for older hardware.
(Latest version is always posted at top of page 1 in thread.)
