The new kernel version, 3.5, features a number of important improvements including meta-data checksumming for the ext4 file system which should improve file system integrity, improvements to the "secure computing" sandbox for better security; and several tweaks to networking, which should improve reliability and performance. Perhaps the most interesting new feature is the introduction of Android-style aggressive suspend which would allow the operating system to put the machine to sleep when nothing important is happening.
