raffy,

I think you posted in the wrong thread by mistake?

Wanderer,

ce2 booted fine with 3 files as the zdrv.sfs wasn't needed this time. The osmo app didn't work because it was missing a lib. Gxineshell (I think that is right) didn't work when I clicked on "Play". File not found error. All the other apps on the screen seemed to work. The kernel is too old for my wireless so I didn't connect to the internet.

at http://www.smokey01.com/wanderer/

this is CE-3.iso
it is a woof built debian squeeze
it is still incomplete
but has some modifications

cosmetic stuff
as i said before it will probably be the base for our iso
since it is the newest debian i can find in woof
play with it and tell me your thoughts
i will post another update soon

Just now downloaded CE-3.iso, made a CD-RW, it booted just fine on my 2012 desktop PC, and looking good. :D

Installed xfe, and it's working fine.
I'll wait 'till this matures some more before investing more time to tweak.
Won't make a pupsave file.

I’m unable to boot CE-3.iso.It asks me to select a resolution but whichever one I select,X fails to start.Even in Vesa mode.
I managed to boot the last test .iso but only in Vesa mode.

hi community edition puppy fans

now that the experts are working on a new woof
the real development for the community edition has moved there

i am asking anyone that is making new puppies
with the new woof system
to consider making a community edition candidate
and posting a link to it
on the community edition thread

this should speed development up substantially
and also give the community
a variety of puppy versions to choose from
with so much talent around
we should not limit ourselves
to just one community edition version

remember the community edition is a joint effort
of the whole puppy community

i will continue to work
on my community edition candidate
but since i am not an expert
it will take me a while
to get to something useful

post your thoughts
(and your community edition candidates)

thanks

wanderer,
The big boys in the woof thread are up to something good:
Iguleder wrote:IMHO, the next logical step is to get rid of xorgwizard, that crappy udev replacement shell script, legacy code for ancient kernels (i.e everything below kernel 2.6.32.x) and all the Xorg 7.3 legacy stuff.
You have already proven, you can do it - no need to waist your dev time on old woof.

Report on CE-3 on this netbook:

Did complete bootup. I think it got to loading the sfs file then the screen went blank and hung. Tried pfix=nox but same result. ce1 and ce2 booted using xvesa on this machine so I don't know what was different with this one.

The behavior is the same as when I tried to boot Akita Linux or Puppy 4.1.2. a while back.

Hello, wanderer.

First, thanks for your initiative.

I spent the last hour testing the CE-3. Here are my general impressions.

- The CE-3 version has the pupsave bug. It creates a pupsave with
"-1 mg" size... That's "-" as in "minus". The latest BK Puppies had it too.
Obviously, you can't save anything in a file that has a negative size. Or
is this Puppy actually an anti-matter version... (hehe) it counts everything
in negative numbers! :)

Actually, it's not funny. The pupsave routine does not work in CE-3, not
with the GUI, and not even with the CLI. I'm a power user and I know
how to create a pupsave file with dd, but the new user won't. So it is
imperative that this bug be fixed ASAP. Forget woof for this, bring
back the older pupsave scripts from Puppy 4.31 if necessary, but fix
this now.
(Sorry for shouting at you, but this is important. This bug
is really embarrassing for a distro based on personal save files, don't
you think?)

Or maybe provide an empty ready-made pupsave file, that people can
just unzip and use. (Note: I've created two of 384 Mb and 768 Mb sizes.
Will test and be back.)

Once that is solved, we should also check the pupsave increase-size
script. That didn't work properly either in Puppy 5.7.1.

It's not much use testing anything if your settings can't be saved in a
file, but from memory, I noticed that CE-3 has:
- old, old programs: abiword 2.8.2, seamonkey 1.1.18, xorg 1.7.7...
- xorg "probe" and "Choose" options are no good, I had to choose
__ vesa to get on the desktop.
- very run-of-the-mill GTK and jwm themes. No choice of themes in green
__ or red, for example.

I hope I'm not discouraging you and your collaborators. I think this is a
very good project. But bug-solving is part of the game, unfortunately.

Best regards.

Hello, wanderer, and all.

There you go, 1.152 Gb worth of pupsave files in 11k... :)

One is named CEsave-pupsave.2fs, and has a size of 384 Mb.
The other is named CEsave-other.2fs, and has a size of 768 Mb.

You first unpack the attached bz2 file in your /mnt/home/CE-3 folder or in
your /mnt/home folder with pupzip. You should now have two zip files.
Unpack the two zipped files again with pupzip in the same place. You
now have two pupsave files with their full sizes, 384 Mb and 768 Mb.

Once you have them unpacked as files CEsave-pupsave.2fs and
CEsave-other.2fs, you can edit the "pupsave" and "other" part of the
filename to anything you like, as long as the first character is a letter,
not a number. To identify the file with today's date, for example, you
could rename "CEsave-pupsave.2fs" to "CEsave-p131117.2fs".

That done, reboot your CE-3 Puppy. Upon reboot, you will be presented
with a choice:
hit "0" if you want a "virgin" CE-3 Puppy with no possibility of a personal file;
hit "1" for the "other" 768 Mb pupsave file (or whatever name you have changed it to);
hit "2" for the smaller "pupsave" file of 384 Mb's (or whatever name you have changed it to).

Any questions? Please ask.

Enjoy!

Hello, all.

Me again.
- The pupsave-increase script works ok.
- The pet install script does nothing. I had to install (copy) desired pets
manually.
- Run this and wonder...

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
# info-gnl.sh
####
ldd --version
Xorg -version
echo
uname -a
if Wheezypup and upupraring are not way more advanced on the (e)glib
and xorg levels...
- Look at the attached screen capture and see the CE-3 possibilities...

thanks guys for testing the ce3.iso

i changed the spec file
and it seems to have lost some functions
the things you are reporting
worked in the previous isos
its probably not reading the packages fully

i'll have to do more runs
and post another iso

thanks for all your work

20 Sep 2013 - Barry quits
06 Nov 2013 - wanderer starts this CE project
13 Nov 2013 - Woof at Github starts

No good deed will go unpunished ...
Puppy Linux have been adrift and rudderless for 2 months. Here comes wanderer and brings the community and their big guys out of their lethargic stupor. In essence, Woof at Github came up as a sluggish response to CE. So, we all owe wanderer a debt of gratitude. As for the wrinkles of his first build - aren't they all hardcoded into woof? Should he continue his work based on the current/flawed woof or wait a little bit for the CE woof, that won't have those wrinkles?

Hi, anikin.

We could correct the shortcomings by importing the scripts that worked in
previous versions, and then... (hush, man, lower your voice to a whisper)
... remaster... (shame, shame). :lol:

Rah-rah-rah, hey-hey-hey, give Puppyists stuff that works! Stuff that
works! (Shucks, Flash, where did you put the revolution icon!) ;)

you are very kind
it is people like you
who make this such a great community (and world)

i am very glad to see everything progressing
and everyone working together
it is clear puppy will continue to be a great distro

i will be glad to see the new woof develop
however i do not think the old woof is lacking

the errors in the isos i posted
are due to the fact
that i am just learning how things work
i am very happy with the old woof
and want to use it for the time being
i am sure i will be able to create a satisfactory iso
in a reasonable amount of time
when the new woof is ready
and i have learned enough about it
i will merge the systems
and use their developments

i am in the process of doing more runs
and am learning a lot
i expect my next iso will be significantly better

i am aiming at my next iso
being ready by the weekend

thanks once again for all your work
and the words of encouragement

Hi, wanderer.

Sometimes I do jokes that I'm the only one to find funny... No offense
intended. Or maybe in a way, this CE will operate a revolution fo sorts,
who knows.

What you're doing I wouldn't have initiated myself, but if I can help, I will.
Just ask. And my remarks above were done in that spirit.

I spent another few hours tonight on CE-3. osmo is lacking most of its
libraries. I got it to work, but it'll cost CE-3 an extra 42 Mg's! I prepared a
pet for these, if needed. Again, just ask. Given the size of those libs,
maybe consider another, less hungry, PIM? Unless the libs can be shared
with another important application.

I couldn't figure out why pets cannot be installed, though. I need to do
more research on the subject.

I also finalized a couple of "ldd-check" scripts, that I'll be putting, later
today or tomorrow, on the "How to test a Puppy" thread. These particular
scripts scan a "bin" folder for missing libraries. Other scripts help me get
a general idea of how things work -- or not -- in a particular Puppy. Maybe
they can be helpful for detective work while constructing CE-3. Just a
thought.

"Good continuation!" BFN.

Hello, all.

Concerning the petget problem, I ran it in console with "set +xe" (for
tracking), and it turned out that the "busybox tar" did not understand
Barry's "--strip=2" command towards the middle of his petget script.

So here's the real GNU tar-1.27, freshly compiled for and on CE-3, at
http://limelinx.com/bko2e. Problem solved! :)

The bz2 file URL'd above contains 3 pets. You're free not to install the
locales one and the docs one, but you must install the executable. :)
Given the particular circumstance, you'll have to unpack the bz2 archive
and unpack the tar...exec pet with pupzip and then copy it to the /usr
folder maually. After that, it will be ok, petget will be functional again and
you will be able to install whatever pet you like, including tar's docs and
locales.

Also, it is important that you rename the "tar" link in /bin to "tar-NO".

Enjoy.

~~~~~~~~~~
Other tests: seamonkey 2.22 installed on CE-3. Works great! Removed
the older one, v. 1.18, in /usr/lib. Don't remove the folder simply named
"seamonkey" there, though. It contains essential configurations.
The XOPUP interface for the PPM should be considered in CE-3, I think.
It's much more intuitive to operate, and prettier, than the default
interface.
:D Hello,
Tested CE3.
Tar is broken, so pets wont work.
Defaultmediaplayer points to gxineshell,
which doesnt exist.
Needs imlib2 and libcurl-gnutls
