An elderly neighbor gave me a good piece of advice, which I also apply now that I'm about the age he was then:
He said "I always quit as soon as I get my 2nd wind". :D

rockytnji,

Thank you also from one in Oregon. I missed the preview and even though I can get USA Network, this gives me the option to view it when I want to.
I may set up my recorder to try getting the whole series recorded.
I have never known how or tried to save TV shows to mp4 files.
What does one use if I may ask?

I just copy and paste a youtube url into a online site youtube converter and downloader.

There are numerous sites on the net.
youtube downloader online
Pick the one you like best and bookmark it under a file, with a name like "Converter"

Funny you mention recording and saving shows.

My Dish Network receiver suffered a lightning strike spike and has been on the fritz since then. They are sending me a new receiver and said I did not need to ship them back my old one. I figure the hard drive is what suffered a stroke.

So the plan is to pull it out of the reciever. Connect it to my external adapter cables.
See If I can pull anything off it with my linux boxes. This will be a 1st for me digging
into a satellite dish receiver. Virgin territory so to speak. So I may just be spinning my
wheels on this project and going no where. Or I might be rebuilding a used receiver.

Only way I know how is to try.

I have an older Direct TV recorder and am really curious as to the format and contents of the hard drive in it.
I am not brave enough to disassemble it since it is a working recorder. But currently, I only have the option to save recorded shows to VHS tapes and would have liked to copy to a digital file on a PC.
The recorder has a port for connecting to a router and I have not tried that yet.

Ifs linux ext3 format but the files are saved directly in the scambled state and only the orginal keycard which is not going to be reusable on new box can decode them. Based on the new model you got the usb port can off load and reload dvr recordings from main drive, you can backup those to say a blueray and keep a copy to play back whenever.
but I serously doubt the drive is actually damaged there is a whole bunch of hardware between where a lighting path to ground would go, ie that box is forever toasted, worthless to dish even to get your harddrive back...

oh before you guys start slapping usb drives into the port be aware the dish machines expects to OWN it and will format it and reformat it at will without user input. Also it will ask if you want to use it for DVR function ( say no ) in that mode it TOTALLY replaces the internal HD you want it for BACKUPS which is not a stated option. If you screw this up you need to call tech and pay the external DVR fee ( about 30 bucks )

Do the Dish boxes auto-delete as well? I know that certain cable boxes will do that, sometimes without telling you if you don't change it in their configuration.

(I haven't messed with them ever since working for a cable company. Haven't paid a bill in four years and not starting now)

Anyone else still watching? Because the shock ending revealed everything. This show is getting seriously interesting. I started making fun of it, but it's actually turning out pretty awesome.

I have.

I have not messed with the old dvr after setting up the new one.
Not a priority lately.
Dealing with new member ship since AntiX 15 went final instead.

Drilling drives. Us country boys have 7mm Magnum rifles to drill
a hard while drinking beer and target practicing.
Shock of impact helps the wiping.

Yeah I liked it too but less and less tech comments
last show I think it was just

"Most companies hasn't upgraded since shellshock"

I like snafu in the lead role, hopes his version of reality gets ever more
twisted as the show goes on

It can't all be about the computers :)

I have my own guess as to his reality

Hold up. So you format, then toss and shoot, then use the drives?

I never managed to get AntiX to work. And I really wanted to just for the lemon-lime soda desktop.

then use the drives?
For trout line sinkers.

F keys on grub screen are there for problem gear in AntiX.
You Tube is chock full of install videos on what I just mentioned.

Here is hoping the next episode blows some stuff up.
Taking down a building of back up servers makes some peoples
body parts get wet. 8)

Mr Robot is fun

Who is not working for 'Evil Corp' or running on Evil Corp hardware?

As I said to my imaginary friend only the other day:

'Which one of us is the cyborg again?'

Were you able to tell that Tyrell Wellick "the new young boss" at Evil Corp
was Swedish and his fetish pregnant wife Danish?

Was E Corp listed as a hardware company? I thought they were one of those "hands in many baskets" type corps. Like Microsoft if they became really demented.

Well most of the 'do no evil', evil corps - Apple (now developing Icar/Titan), Google (now develping 'big dog' and other DARPA collaborations), MS, IBM etc are all part software, part hardware, part evil, part Robot, part good.

In the words of Nonymouse:

Knowledge is free.
We are Nonymouse
We are Legion.
We do forgive.
We do forget
We are Expecting.
