Downloaded and not long ago installed Mageia 6 dev 1; a more than 4GB download to find I couldn't get networking to work in it.
Yes. I could spend what past experience has shown me could be an hour or more trying to get it to work, but at the moment I just don't feel like it; life's too short and there are plenty of other distros to use (including Puppy of course).
[EDIT: I did finally manage to configure networking in Mageia through the Mageia Control Centre. I'm posting from Mageia now ].

I can't promise anything but maybe this will help as starting point for someone:mcewanw wrote:Now if only we could get Toni (saintless) and Fred to become curious enough about Fedora to get to grips with making a dog out of a good, preferably official, version of it...

Liquid Lemur is no more
Another sad message from someone (Ed Snyder) who has decided to cease developing his distro due to apparent lack of interest;
http://liquidlemurlinux.org/
For the record, I still use Liquid Lemur and find it to be a good distro. It's unusual in that it has WindowMaker as its main window manager, but you can easily install others; I installed Cinnamon and find it works well.
Maybe the problem is and was that there are just so many distros around now, and Lemur didn't have what it took to stand out from the crowd, at least not in the eyes of most Linux users?

I installed PCBSD 10.3 to the hard drive of an Acer desktop pc.
The computer is an i3 with 6gb ram.
You get a choice of kde or fluxbox as the window manager.
You can search for and add applications from the AppCafe, I added
geany,mtpaint, and gkrellm so far.
Lots to explore but it's working well so far.
Edit: I did another install to a 128gb usb-3.0 SSD on my Acer laptop
(ati hd 5470 graphics card)

libpepflashplayers.so in Korora 23
More specifically, after installing the chromium pepperflash rpm get libfreshwrapper-flashplayer.so from here:Colonel Panic wrote:...have to watch videos in Chromium (which I had to install using dnf), so it's a bit more limited than what I'm used to.
https://github.com/zma/libfreshwraper-f ... yer-fedora
and place it in /home/spot/.mozilla/plugins (substitute spot with your own non-root user). Then create a symlink to libpepflashplayer like this:
Code: Select all
cd /home/spot/.mozilla/plugins
ln -sf /usr/lib64/chromium/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so ./libpepflashplayer.so
To work, libfreshwrapper-flashplayer.so needs to have ownership of your non-root user (assuming you are not running Firefox as root), e.g.
Code: Select all
su root
cd /home/spot/.mozilla/plugins
chown spot:spot libfreshwrapper-flashplayer.so

Thanks for all that; I tried it and it worked!Keisha wrote:More specifically, after installing the chromium pepperflash rpm get libfreshwrapper-flashplayer.so from here:Colonel Panic wrote:...have to watch videos in Chromium (which I had to install using dnf), so it's a bit more limited than what I'm used to.

In other news; I've recently installed the latest testing version of Vector Standard (7.2 A1.2), and it's working well.

Sorry to disappoint, but that isn't me; I (very) occasionally visit MakeUseOf but don't post there and haven't done so in the past either.Mike Walsh wrote:Hiya, Colonel Panek..!
I didn't know you frequented MakeUseOf..?
(I assume that IS your 'alter ego'? From the description of the systems in use, it sounded very like you.....)
Mike.
In other news; I've recently installed Scientific Linux 6.7, and as far as I can tell it doesn't do anything that Stella (which is also based on Centos 6) doesn't.
Gigabyte M68MT-52P motherboard, AMD Athlon II X4 630, 5.8 GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive running Ubuntu 16.04.6, MX-19.2, Peppermint 10, PCLinuxOS 20.02, LXLE 18.04.3, Pardus 19.2, exGENT 200119, Bionic Pup 8.0 and Xenial CE 7.5 XL.
Just discovered Manjaro-OpenRC yesterday. James C posted about it recently, but I didn't realize OpenRC meant "without systemd, at all" (it's the default init in systemd-free Gentoo).
Really nice looking and fast. Xfce desktop uses only 150M RAM on my old P4 laptop (Openbox desktop also available at 110MB). Based on Arch, which I never tried before, but am very impressed with now. Rolling release, so no major upgrades and always up to date. The "stable" version of Manjaro is just two weeks behind cutting-edge Arch. I found Palemoon, Avidemux, and Skype in the repository, which are all unavailable in Debian repositories. And no problem running as root (except for the warnings...) Very well done distro.
Edit: Manjaro-OpenRC also worked on my old Inspiron 8200, which hasn't been able to get to the desktop with anything newer than Ubuntu Precise. Runs nice.
Manjaro-OpenRC available here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/manjaro-openrc/

Several years now,...bark_bark_bark wrote:hmm... I never heard of Refracta before. How long has it been around for?
I can remember that a Debian forum member started it back when I was a regular there. Hmmm,..think that was about 2009 or so.
There was a LOT of concern then about some of the Debian devs working on Ubuntu also,...(and vice versa). The fear was that Debian would become more "Ubuntu-like" (amonst other things)..and not pure Debian. Forgot the name of the forum member,..but he later changed his username to "Refracta" as well. ( Ahhhh, such trivia I can remember.)
EDIT: Ah yes,...the fellow's forum name was "meandean" (before he went with "Refracta" for awhile). Just went to Refracta's site and saw the name,..jogged the ol' memory.
Since I'm having some trouble with my install of pure Debian,...might just try this out for now. Looks like fun.
