The earlier "unfixed" V9 I grabbed from the megaupload and the fixes should do for now.

This is a great project, and one of my favorite specialized distros. Thanks, sc0ttman!
Hmmm... I tested the -c option in wget, and i was able to continue where i left off, until I got a mountable iso...

Oh well... Here's a mirror: http://www.multiupload.com/B1YTXEAP3E

Hey scOttman

It downloaded from a mirror on the first try. md5 checks out and the iso is mountable. I'm replacing my previous frugal install now.

The progression from v7 to 8 and 9 has been awesome. Thanks for the mirrors.

Performance is not so good at the moment, at least not on my PC!

multi-boot install issues

#26 Post by sunbound »

I'm pretty new to this stuff, so please be patient with me.

I would like to install Puppy Arcade 9 - fixed, alongside Qimo 2.0 (already installed). I have re-partitioned the hard drive, given puppy 2 GB of space, installed it using the utility and i "think" i updated GRUB successfully, but when I reboot the PC, Qimo comes up automatically, and i never see an option to load a different OS.

I also plan to install another distro or two in the future (as i try new ones out).

any help would be appreciated.

thank you

To be honest, last time I used a boot loader was LILO... I'm sure it's not difficult, but I'm no expert, so it's best to look elsewhere for specific info about installing Puppy with GRUB.

Search "GRUB" or "GRUB4DOS" on this site: http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

You will find things like this very quickly:

Sunbound,

Qimo 2 appears to come with Grub 2 (according to Distrowatch).

Puppy installation assumes Grub legacy (0.97) so I don't think it will be setting up Grub for you.

Not sure of how knowledgeable you are to edit the grub2 conguration process.

The following thread discusses setting up Puppy (not Arcade specifically) with Grub2. If you need further help with the parameters required for Arcade please say but they should follow those for a standard series 4/5 Puppy.

@Sunbound
"Grub 1" (legacy) cant update "grub 2"

So i suppose you have 2 options
Get rid of grub 2... and install a fresh grub 1 in the partition you want
But... to make this.... first you need to make backups of grub 2 files, and the MBR of the hdd
And you will need to configure grub 1 menu.lst

But the easy solution is to use "supergrub disk 2" to update your grub 2 files
You can run "supergrub 2" from the isolinux menu of "partedmagic" livecd (isolinux is the first screen you see when booting... in the "extras" submenu... no need to boot the real distro)
http://partedmagic.com/

*If you boot parted magic distro... there is a option to make a parted magic install to a USB pendrive (usefull for netbooks)
Btw... this install in a pendrive uses syslinux as other pupplets that runs from USB (.i.e puppeee & fluppy).. so is easy to make a "dual boot" pendrive with partedmagic + another pupplet

*There is an app (ghost for linux) in the main desktop to make backups of partitions and MBR... you can store this backups in another partition of the same drive... another drive... or another pc using network

*Gparted is included as other usefull tools

Lets play with grub :D (but make backups before)

i've just installed puppy arcade on athlon 1.2ghz w 768mb and 120gb hd. this system will eventually drive a 15" CRT and be installed into a half-size arcade cabinet.
the initial live cd boot went perfect, it was nice to check out the features before installing. i'm no linux expert so i had to look up how to fdisk, mkfs, fsck my old windows drive through the terminal. would be nice if there was a script to "wipe and format" a drive in one step during the install puppy arcade to internal IDE. GParted seems to be unavailable in the version i downloaded (about a week ago) so i had to use fdisk (scary).
regardless, it's running great now! very fast to boot and has every emulator and utility app that i could imagine needing.
a few requests for help:
1. i'm going to mount the monitor vertically, so i am wondering how i can go about changing the screen rotation. i imagine it's something to do with the X server? any pointers or links to documents would help, i've looked up a couple things, but they seem to be quite complicated.
2. is it possible to somehow turn off any or all boot screens, the Grub loader is nice, but so would just booting directly into puppy. not sure how this can be "turned off". along the same lines, the system messages during bootup are nice to see, but could they also be hidden? echo off was the command in a ms-dos script.

anyway, thanks a lot again for this awesome bit of work. you've taken the need of buying an XP license for an old machine and given me the ability to completely customize a MAME cabinet's software without a great deal of effort. honestly, i would still be quite satisfied if i only could use puppy arcade on a live CD and go through the setup each time i boot up the machine. now i can make this cabinet look and act like i want.

Sounds great, I'd love to see a pic posted here when its done...

Did you try the "Puppy Universal Installer"? (Press Alt+Space and type the name to find it).. This should do it.. But it may require GParted..

Gparted has indeed been removed, a controversial removal, I know, it will annoy some, but many use a frugal install (to USB drive) or live CD boot.

But "Parted" is still included, which is a CLI app, which works in a similar way to GParted. Type 'parted' in the terminal to load it.

However GParted can be easily added again through the Puppy Package Manager (PPM), aka PetGet. This is in the Puppy Menu, under "System"..

As always, you can hit Alt+Space and type the programs name to find it and load it.

Possibly this can be done through SDLMAME settings but I couldnt say how else you would do this without a lotta learnings!

No idea how you would do that, but as you already said, you would need to edit 2 things - GRUB and initrd.gz (well, the init script inside it, I guess)

:D I'm very happy to like it! Hope you enjoy it, if you have any problems, don't forget to check the all the readmes (/usr/share/doc) or check these forums, members are very, very helpful here...

First of all, great work with this release, it looks very snazzy ;D

I'm fairly new to Puppy Linux and Linux in general, so I've run into a few networking problems.

It says that Puppy Arcade 9 is based off of the 2.6.25 kernel, which does not package the iwlwifi5000 drivers by default. Is there an easy way I can either (a) patch to 2.6.27 or (b) manually install the drivers so that my Intel Wifi 5000agn works?

Thanks!

Thanks, glad you like it.

Here's a quote from jemimah, about kernel patching, found on this forum:
...it will be easier to start with a Puppy kernel and patch that.

You can download Puppy's kernel source from here:
http://bkhome.org/sources/ (reading the readme is helpful).

First, you need to do a full install and figure out how to install the kernel source and the devX to a full install. You can harvest the new kernel and modules to build a frugal later, but building on a full install is much less confusing...
Here is some more info:

http://kernelnewbies.org/FAQ/KernelCompilation
http://www.puppylinux.com/development/compilekernel.htm
http://pateo.wordpress.com/2009/12/25/h ... inux-dpup/
http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/Kern ... HOWTO.html
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/Ke ... the_kernel

Also, about editing initrd.gz:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42854

But if you wanted to manually install the drivers, then see the links below.
However, after reading this, it looks as though you'll need a kernel upgrade or patch.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 942#251942
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 183#252183

(Tempestuous is the man at this sort of thing...)

Also:

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=34159

So... An easy option is to install the Puppy Arcade pet file (or sfs file) to another version of Puppy Linux, which does support your wifi drivers.

You can get Puppy Arcade as a pet file here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=58134

Hope that helps a bit..

It depends which graphics plugin you are using. If using the OpenGL plugin, then yes, otherwise, no.
The 'soft' (software renderer) plugin does a great job in PCSX, even without OpenGL installed/enabled.

And have you tried scrolling the mouse around to find the game window?
Sometimes you need to do that, depending on your settings.

Can you hear the games sound or music? If so, this is probably it.
Playing with your graphics plugins settings is the way to go.

If not, I would try changing plugins and retrying.

Yes, ePSXe and pSX are both available for Puppy Arcade,
and both have been used as the default emulator in the past.

I found that PCSX works best without OpenGL, and does not require any Sony BIOS..

ePSXe also does not require OpenGL but didn't work as nicely without it.

pSX work beautifully, but requires both OpenGL and a Sony BIOS file.

All these emulators have good compatibility, and usually work (very) well when setup correctly.

You can get all of these emulators here: http://ppm.scottjarvis.com
(Just look in the emulation section...)

Puppy Arcade 9 Installation

#39 Post by alekie »

Hello,

First time user of Puppy Arcade.
Having issues with install.

Hardware:
VIA EPIA 800 M/B
30GB HDD
Standard CD-ROM (which I hope to remove after install)

LiveCD boots up without issue
When rebooting with CD ejected grub does not appear
Researched issue
Gparted the HDD -> 3GB Swap, the rest EXT2
formatted the main partition EXT2
Reinstalled with Full Install option
Receive a GRUB error "file not found"
Grub Rescue prompt
Apparently grub cannot find the kernel even though it is pointed to it.

Does anyone have a howto guide on installing Puppy Arcade 9 on a standard hard drive?

I have also attempted to install on a virtual machine via VirtualBOX and it fails.

I have confirmed the md5 checksum on the download and cannot find anything wrong.

Please Help
