Thanks
Thanks @radky - looks good to me - but I see there are already comments on the other thread - I'll await the conclusion before YAD

Meanwhile here is a ydrv (false .gz) for those who want to test....

ZestyPup 17.10.16

Using Light browser, as it comes installed in ZestyPup, with nothing added to it.

YouTube videos play too fast and sound is distorted.
This is using the YouTube default HTML5 player.
Player speed is set to normal.
Speed adjust has no affect.

Is some add-on needed in Light? :idea:

Correct - Light is not perfect - you need to replace it with a heavyweight!
Maybe I should replace Light with something even lighter weight like Netsurf (3.7 getting good reviews) so that Youtube doesn't work at all....

+1 Big YES, Peebee. To be kind, Light is a piece of sh#t and am totally confused why you even go to the trouble of putting it in or providing it. Plus, you already make it so easy to download (through the SFSes you make) that anyone can choose what they want. Plus, it gives the illusion of customization :wink: You know, maybe make that "Get Web Browser", which I first experienced in LxPupSc and now love, mandatory for all your releases. You can't get any clearer and easier than that script---it does everything for you.

As for including Netsurf, I've been fooling with it (especially since Rerwin started in his updated Lupus) and have been pleasantly surprised. NetSurf is almost getting up there with the last QTweb (3.5) from a few years ago but without QT's sometime irritating tendency to out-of-the-blue crash. Then there's the fact that QT hasn't been updated/ supported for all those years. It's still a good browser, don't get me wrong, but NetSurf seems to be the way forward.

Concerning Light, Pelo (alias hamoudoudou) was right when he said that
installing apulse fixes the video issue (for some inexplicable reason). I tested
other versions of Light, and they do not have the video bug.

ArtfulPup-17.10.01 iso is available....

artfulpup-17.10.01.iso

No devx yet.
Still kernel 4.9.56 - move to 4.13 like Ubuntu-17.10?

Should be very similar to ZestyPup....but now made from Ubuntu Artful Aardvark components.

One regression - libx265 is reverted to version 110 (130 in AA) until ffmpeg can be rebuilt.

There is also a new version of Chromium (32-bit) - but note that this is Run-As-Spot.

I tested both Light 48 and Light 49...

- One of the gtk2 packages played youtube too fast for me too, with 'crumpled' sound...
- The other Light pkg played vids fine but without sound (until I added the apulse PET, then sound worked)...

For me Light is running brilliantly, once I added the apulse PET it works faster than firefox, no errors, no bugs, all sites work fine...

I've compiled netsurf 3.6, framebuffer and GTK versions, and I must say I am not impressed...

Unless I can figure out how to change the User Agent string in Netsurf, then by default pages will insist on trying to give Netsurf the "full JS experience",
which usually doesn't work well at all..

For me Netsurf can't use youtube, facebook, bbc news, anything with AJAX, etc..

(Note I compiled netsurf against duktape, not against the moz js libs... But I had already tested netsurf-3.3 from the Slackware repo,
which uses the moz JS lib (js185), and still didn't work better with JS enabled sites...)

Netsurf would probably work pretty nice if we can work out a way to change its User Agent string to report itself as a non-JS capable browser...

Just my 2 cents..

Well, I'm getting to be a real whiz at setting up zesty and now artful :)
Gee, I now have a pup named after me!

I noticed no problems setting up artful with the stuff I'm interested in.
Installed several items via PPM, plus the no-spot chromium. Root for
puppies!

Probably - not tested - would be OK with suitable renaming - but safest to make a copy and try that....

Tray manager now has option to set date settings in clock format.

Jwm-2.3.5 allows the jwm-theme to include clock font/colors (as in screenshot), but because this is not supported in jwm-2.3.2 (used in Slacko), I won't update the embedded themes in Woof yet - Stardust (bright/dark). See /usr/share/jwm/themes/.

The Zesty global theme uses the Stardust-dark jwm theme. I suggest you create a unique theme for Zerty/Artful. Here is the Stardust-dark with included ClockStyle

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<JWM>

  <WindowStyle>
    <Font>DejaVu Sans-10</Font>
    <Width>4</Width>
    <Height>22</Height>

    <Outline>#777</Outline>
    <Active>
      <Foreground>#eee</Foreground>
      <Background>#222:#757575</Background>

17.10.01 remains the base - however there is a delta which bumps just the iso to 17.10.01++ which fixes the light / apulse / youtube issue....I believe

and adds Zibert's clock format changes

Posted: Sun 22 Oct 2017, 18:01
by artsown
Confirm Light now plays videos ok after doing the delta

edit: Don't see the clock date option. I do see a option that seems to
be new ... one that adds seconds to the 12 hour clock. For example,
it's now reading 02:12:23:PM

Peebee mentioned that few posts ago.

@peebee, damn, you're on fire, Zesty builds, Artful builds, and I saw the jokes about the deltas. Impressive work mate!

No changes done regarding apulse and ROX-Filer columns..
Information will be given to downloaders on sourceforge.net
Apulse is only 37k to add in adrv !
About Mozilla-light, this browser was yet included in some Puppies. Some feedback is available. I run ZestyPup and now ArtfulPup only for testing, to take a glance at Kernels. Kernel -56 still here..
Feed back about extreme slowness of kernels 4.9 exists, but in different topics. Some Canadian VIPs even remasterize Xenialpups with kernels 4.1 to recover desktop fluidity.
Xenialdog still winner compared to Ubuntu's Puppies serie 6.. XenialDog is more Puppy than Puppies, nowadays,

People should be able to run ArtfulPup without consulting a forum, even if they speak English. You should know that even respectuous and long time puppy-builders are unable to ask questions here.
If you get only your colleagues as testers, that is a first step, but far away of Windows downladers that you can see on my reports. They even don't speak Linux.
"kernel 4.9 makes anything run as slow as molasses in winter." And winter not yet arrived in Quebec

Still no test about Wireless Winter is coming. I will wait Easter for testing with a dongle. Artfulpup will be then "B" xxxxxPup
