Sorry I took so long to get back to you madcrow,

in /root/.packages you will find a file called DISTRO_PKGS_SPECS the repo info is on lines 5 and 8 of that file, they have to be manually edited.

Hey Guys...Great work.
I also had problem with Pwireless2 when selected from the Network category of the menu. When selected, Pwireless2 would start and find no networks just as described above. However, I did notice that if Dpup control panel was selected, using the link for "wireless"
would start pwireless-0.8.4 which would find and connect to the network. I followed 01micko directions and Pwireless2 now works from main menu but Dpup control panel still starts the older version.

Again, Thanks to all for all of thehard work!!!!!

As expected really worth! Posting now from it. I prefer Firefox.

Used some iconsthemes and see no change in icon folders; Where do live this icons? Can reset the defaults?

Hi

I did find a new beta1 "5" from yesterday in the depository.

I did write immediately and start an CD with that new ISO but, oh how terrible, the old disease of the new puppy's versions reappears:

the screen of the ACER emachines laptop is terrible dark. it is not possible to read. and it is not possible to increase the brightness of the screen...

sorry

bye

Dpup 484 does not have backlight support to my Acer laptop also, but same situation has been since Puppy 4.2. 4.12 is latest it had through /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/brightness which I have tested. It is installed by video module.
I have asked advice in different threads without cure. Compiling kernel with support to right module has been closest.

Acer-wmi adds backlight folder, but echo .... command does not alter brightness. My laptop is usually ok, but brightness is sometimes lowest. So something changes it.

So none new Puppy or puplet has support to some acer laptops I believe. Mine is Acer Travelmate 6592g.

Excuse my long story, but unable to change brightness is my biggest problem with puppies.

I tested dpup today and I installed vlc 0.86 from lenny repo succesfully. It seemed to work. VLC 1.03 should be in squuze repo so I am waiting it to puppy manager.

Streamit crashed X every time I tested it, so my laptop went totally black several times.

Hi Pemasu
pemasu wrote:unable to change brightness is my biggest problem with puppies.
exactly! this question is a major problem with puppy

and is an old problem...

but some versions don't have it: puppy 4.2 from turbopup oder the French Puplet from Petihar. with those versions, I can turn the brightness on but puppy don't remember this parameter for the next start...

and terrible is that diverse puppy friends working to make new pupplet prefer dark backgrounds and forget to offer a really hell background (white uni!) under the alternativ backgrounds...

the screen is dark, the texts are dark and the picture and background are dark... terrible!

bye

Sorry, couldn't resist :) :) :)!

I have tracked down 2 patches for the backlight issue with Acer Travelmates, it is a known prob in Debian, one is a new kernel module I will have to compile which allows access to the Acer special keys, and the other is backlight adjustment utility...

I will get them out as patches, as soon as complete....

BTW, has anyone with Travelmate tried the xbacklight utility available in debian repo, or just goto PPM and in Find type xbacklight.

Cheers

8) Past issues of screen display were resolved and I was able to boot into Dpup without issue.

The wbar integration felt messy and I kept having to run
restart first run wizard as my screen icons kept reappearing
- this meant I lost any customizations.
I eventually got to a point were wbar disappeared into a screen box
so again reran the wizard

The wbar is though a simple and easy option
with the initial wizard allowing a standard Puppy type icons on screen option.
In fact dpup looking and behaving like a standard Puppy initially,
makes it a straightforward transition from earlier versions.

Firefox had a modern chrome default look that I liked
and soon got used to.

The screen saver dialogue display fonts were tiny and unreadable and changing the font sizes of the desktop does not seem to modify that code.
I rather like the screen saver options and maybe if an add more screen savers were easily possible though the control panel or other method . . .

The control panel threw me again - I click on icons - nothing happens,
so I reboot - ah yes you have to click on text.

Next I tried adding software
Nothing much came up
but Cinelerra did and I installed and Cinelerra worked OK
- well I assumed it did - seems quite an advanced video editor

So not sure where all the Debian progs are - but did not play much with the package manager

The gem game (swap adjoining gems to make three in a row) played music and could be quite addictive.
Still suffering frozen bubble withdrawal symptoms (in other Puppys)
The music added a lot

Dpup seems to be making natural progress, with improved updates, testing, new programs, patches support etc

Woof Woof :)

The turn around to 484beta2 will be quite quick, as 484 was such a large change from 482, there are a number of issues I have addressed which warrant a new beta release...484beta2 will be out within a day....

dpup484 + 3 pets nobody-font.pet, pwireless-2-beta-2.5.pet, 484Beta1-patch1

1. gprs connect is failing to connect at all.
#pgrps-connect gives bash command not found.
no gprs links in network menu
gprs-connect-chatmm doesn't do anything

2. keeps asking for keyboard layout and time zone on each boot
3,first run wizard similarly keeps appearing after boot..

goodpoints: pfind can now find things again after failures in other recent puppies
