Puppy cracks double-digit barrier at Distrowatch!
Just wanted to congrat everybody here...
Puppy is now #9 on both 6 & 1 month ratings at Distrowatch...
that's above MEPIS, well above Kubuntu, Gentoo, Knoppix, RedHat, Damn Small, and other long-revered marques...

puppy love
The reason? It's Puppy Love month fast approaching.
I've mentioned once in Barry's blog that some Puppy users have told me that USB booting/driver loading has been excellent in Puppy 4, and this was their only problem with earlier puppies. So a big constraint has been removed in Puppy 4. (Note that Barry added a fix to another USB bug in 4.1.2 .)
Of course Barry's unique creation really deserves the ranking.

Puppy is Linux (kernel) but it is also uniqueBarry's unique creation really deserves the ranking
People try more things. Get more hardware working. More useful.
Faster. More fun.
Linux is a meritocracy. We are moving towards the top five distros.
Everybody Loves Puppy.

IMO, Damn Small Linux is behind, because you have to jump through hoops to get full Nvidia and ATI support, you're required to rebuild the X server!
While OTOH, Puppy is pretty much as easy as Ubuntu, reguarding the enabling of full Nvidia and ATI support while still real lean.
I like the .pet package concept.

and yet ..... the developer base for the distros you mentioned far outclass puppylinux

class
Uh, "class" matters in Linux development? In that case someone should propose a new ranking of the distros based on this.

If someone would add the puppies 4.31 release to ibiblio and then release it as a puppy, probably we could take #1. Lots of Firefox users out there.

Puppies is mentioned prominently at puppylinux.org (both in the front page and in the /news).
Didn't you mention before that you have a sourceforge account?

Cool
Awesome! It's nice to see its becoming increasingly popular. I have to download and give the new version a try. I'm looking forward to that.
I note though that the reviewers never seem to quite fully get what puppy is and always complaining about running as root. Why would that even matter if you have a firewall? Maybe I don't fully understand the issue but I've never had any problems with lost data or felt it was insecure. Quite the contrary, I feel relieved by how predictable it is. For example I set up the one on our upstairs PC and haven't touched it since except to install additional software.
What Barry and the other's have done is amazing.

Re: Running as root
What percentage of reviews on restaurants, movies or books have you read that rang true? For me the percentage is quite small so it's no surprise that a distro review is equally off base. As for running as root IMO the complaints are based on the idea that if there is a choice to be made between convenience and security then security must come first. IMO arguments against running as root are a red herring. PC security is comprised of many issues. Anyone who claims running as root is paramount just doesn't understand the subject.
Popularity is important especially in todays world where so many people place such a premium on it.
Quality however is what matters most to me. I hope developers will place a premium on stability rather than cutting edge features.
I am happy to see Puppy's rise at DistroWatch.
One last point about popularity: I tried Ubuntu thinking that it's popularity was an indicator of newbie usability. As a consequence I wasted two years trying to understand Linux. I booted Puppy for the first time in July of '09 and within a few weeks I accomplished things I found impossible with Ubuntu.

I agree the complaints about running as root are mostly unfounded. However, lacking proper multiuser support is still a pretty embarrassing thing in a Linux distro! I'm a big fan of leaving the default operation as-is, but with the proper infrastructure so that people who do want to use multiuser can optionally do so without too much pain. I have a multiuser derivative of 4.2.1 nearly complete and will be documenting it well enough that anybody who is comfortable with sed should be able to recreate it in other versions. (That's important because I'm not willing to re-do the work again for newer Puppies. Better things to do.)
