Updated 2.14-based versions will not connect

#1 Post by Roy »

I have posted a reply to John Biles' request for feedback on booting his latest 2.14-based Legacy pup, and my wireless networking issues with Legacy mirror my issues with Ttuxxx's Classic 214X... wireless will not connect (doesn't even see available networks).

Is there a better or updated wireless driver for the 2.14 kernel available to download? The RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI driver in Wary 060 works very well!

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+
nVidia Corporation C51G [GeForce 6100]
(and an old 15-inch CRT for a monitor)
Conexant Systems, Inc. HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
2985MB RAM
250GB IDE HD

Yes, there are additional/updated drivers, tempestous made some good threads here:

Wifi extras for Puppy 2.14

Extra drivers for Puppy 2 with 2.6.18.1 kernel

ttuuxxx also compiled some additional drivers for Classic Pup 2.14X, you must search in the official 214X thread.

Clarf,

Thank you for your answer and guidance for further searching...

214X already has the RaLink rt61 driver included, but my understanding of reading internet posts indicates that rt61 does not support scanning or (WPA?) encryption. This might help to explain (in my own mind) the complete GUI freeze in John Biles' new Legacy (based on 214X).

The driver I require is actually the RaLink RT2561/RT61 PCI which -- again, I *think* -- is included in the rt2x00 linux module. I could not find this module in 214X or Legacy. Nor have I found it anywhere on the forums for the 2.6.18.1 kernel....

I did find something regarding this rt2x00 module on the Arch wiki, and printed it to a .pdf output to share. NOTE: I simply renamed file from .pdf to .zip to allow forum posting. To read it, rename file to .pdf.

Just so I don't forget it, lspci -n lists my wireless card as 04:06.0 0280:1814:0301 I had to do some hard searching to find this linux-compatible wireless card....

A quick update....

TTuuxxx's Classic 214XRC5 does find a wireless access point AFTER reloading (and rebooting) tempestuous' rt61 driver in the link clarf provided. John Biles provided the same .pet in /root/help-info (but I have not yet gone back into Legacy to test this further than I have ATT).

EDIT: Connectivity was through Pwireless; traditional Network Wizard still shows "no modems detected" in 241XRC5.

Tempestuous' rt61 .pet will allow scanning the wireless links (214XRC5) but the driver will NOT support WPA encryption. (I don't think NDISWRAPPER supports WPA encryption, either.)

Newer kernels (Wary 0.60) already support the rt2x00 module and, thus, the desired RaLink rt2561/rt61 pci wireless driver. If I read everything correctly, linux was playing around with the beta of this module back in 2007.... but it's clearly 2010 now, so I don't know if that is worth anything.

I still want to use these Classic/Legacy puppies on this 5+ year old desktop, but perhaps I want/expect too much with the new(ish) linux-compatible RaLink wireless card.

EDIT: John Biles' Legacy still will not scan for wireless connections after installing rt61.pet and reboot. Rutilt shows

Code: Select all

Critical error:
Can't trigger scanning.
Code: 100
