Frugal Install to HDD

#1 Post by khouse »

My 300GB, 3G RAM, AMD64 Turion X2 HP laptop had Lubuntu 10.10 installed over the entire hard drive (EXT4). Lubuntu allocated 10G to swap. (Big swap, no big deal in the circumstances.) I created a 50GB partition (EXT3) I performed a frugal hdd install with a 511 USB Live using the Universal client and the machine was partitioned as follows:

dev/sda1 240G Lubuntu
dev/sda3 50G Puppy
unallocated 2.5MB
dev/sda2 extended --- dev/sda5 9 GB linux swap

I went to Lubuntu's GRUB and did not find a menu.lst to finish the install.

Any suggestions?

If it is a very modern Luvuntu then it most likely have Grub2 so you need to find descriptions here using the wellminded search to find these threads where people successfully have installed dual boot with Ubuntu grub2 versions.

I only do frugal so I can not give good advice.

Most likely you have to boot up in lubuntu and then do a change in the bootconfig and then an update of grub2 to make it take the new info.

I tested to do that on an old HP/Compaq but failed and I did a manual frugal isntall directly in the file one should not edit. That file only get edited by the automatic update script but I wanted it desperately to work and as long as one did no update of ubuntu it did not get deleted.

Worked good when I finally go it to work.

Grub2 use different codes then brub4DOS.

title is changed to entry and so on.

Grub4DosConfig

Grub4Dos, so simple and safe.
The Grub4DosConfig automatically detect frugal/full installed Puppies, other linuxes and arranges the boot up menu.
Grub4Dos and Grub4DosConfig is in the live CD's of Quirky, Warry, or LupQ.

I use Grub4Dos as well.
I never use the Puppy install but do it by copying the files and editing the menu.lst
I have an USB drive that I've just added 5.2.3 to and updated Hiren without even starting either.

Grub4Dos works well because it can use names as well as the older notation.
I use it in many situations.
In the disk boot sector
In the partition boot
As a DOS executable (some USBs won't accept it on boot for some reason).

Easy boot from .iso as well.

but if Lubuntu follow the trend of Ubuntu then you need to have a grub2 to get it to work?

Ot it has at least used such when it installed itself so if you add a grub4dos to that how does that work.

You still has to chain load the grub4dos to the grub2 so you can almost as easily write the puppy in there instead of the chain load?

Or do you mean some automatic script take care of that automatically when puppy find a grub2 entry to install to?

Edit as su in Lubuntu (or Ubuntu, Flubunto, Gubunto or anybuntu) this file:
/etc/grub.d/40_custom

Add:
menuentry "Puppy" {
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /puppy/vmlinuz psubdir=puppy
initrd /puppy/initrd.gz
}
EOF

(Edit: maybe set root=(hd0,3) with your partitions)

Then save and (only the first time):
# chmod +x /etc/grub.d/40_custom

And:
#update-grub

If you don't see the grub-menu after boot:

Edit: /etc/default/grub
# GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=-1

And don't forget:
#update-grub

No you replace It. Ubuntu install just has a script that runs the install for Grub2. It could just as well be any other boot manager.

I realized Ubuntu-10.04 and grub4dosconfig-1.5.2 has some trouble.
See the solution.
