puppy linux settings -- odd behavior with yahoo, sfs file

#1 Post by libernet »

I used puppy linux (5.7.1 precise) daily, and most of the time it's a great OS.

But from time to time I notice glitches. This time it's an odd browswer problem: in chrome and seamonkey -- yahoo looks like it's being displayed on a mobile device. Every other page looks correct. Just yahoo is the problem.

The other day I noticed that suddenly the resource bar went way low -- but I had added or changed anything. I've seen this before, and never understood why. Some kind of cache that needs to be deleted?

I use chrome as an sfs, so I unloaded it, reloaded it, and the same problem with yahoo. Which I expected as sea monkey has the same problem.

Any ideas on what this could be?

thanks,
SC

Yes, I'm having the same problem here on both Firefox and Chrome. My wife on a windows pc using I.E. at her office is not. I'll be at my office windows pc where I also have a puppy dual boot system in a few hours and I will report back what I find.

BTW,

I'm on slacko-5.6 and chrome is on a sfs but firefox 32.0.2 is a standard install.

Also maybe the OP should move this to bugs?

Sure you are not looking at Yahoo mobile web site?

Give us a link to a Yahoo page that looks as you describe.

The things they do not tell you, are usually the clue to solving the problem.

If you are running Precise using a save file.
This is usually caused by the browser cache set too high. The cache is using up the free space in the save file.
Setting browser to clear cache on exit helps.

Update:

OK, I have a temporary fix for firefox.

Use a agent switcher to fake out yahoo into thinking you are a windows pc.

When I toggle between Windows/IE11 agent and a Linux/Firefox agent the problem toggles with it.

It appears Yahoo is shoving mobile mode down a linux based agent. If I say windows or mac the problem goes away.

I heard Yahoo contracted it's serving through Microsoft a few years ago. I'm sure micro$oft would *never* do anything wrong to a linux agent. </sarc>

@bigpup

Just go to yahoo.com

Please let us know if you are not seeing any problems.

If you are not, which puppy/browser/agent are you using?

Found a user-agent switcher for chrome and that fixes it also.

I'm going to https://www.yahoo.com/ -- same as always.

Not sure what a user agent is.

In any case the fact that sea monkey and chrome both have the same problem seems to me to indicate a problem with some global setting.

@libernet

Here is a youtube training video on how to install a user-agent switcher in chrome.

Hope this helps

@libernet

I'm pretty sure it is not a global problem. I can go to other sites and not have any problems.

IMHO, Yahoo is grouping us with android mobile users and shoving the mobile site down our browsers throat when they see our agent is linux based.

I appreciate all the replies.

The user agent switcher Chrome extension looks simple enough. But a couple of notes:

the developer tools in Chrome allows for a user swap -- I couldn't make it work.

And when I go to the Chrome web store I get this message: Your Chrome version is not supported by the Web Store.Download the latest Google Chrome

So I'm wondering how would I get a newer version of Chrome for puppy -- I'm using the SFS version already supplied.

Thanks

I have not used precise puppy so I am not qualified to recommend a newer sfs. Hopefully someone else can help you with this.

FWIW, The sfs I use is 32.0.1700.77

maybe it will work, but I can't say for sure.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here for you.

Libernet, is this an option? Portable version >> http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=91689

Otherwise, it sounds like you're looking for a way to install this on your outdated Chrome build..

I'm pretty sure the current Slacko can run later builds of Chrome/Chromium.

For the record, Linux Mint on my other laptop is not affected with this.

They're probably underway with some type of maintenance they haven't quite worked out yet..

Hi Semme, Yes what you have posted is what yahoo should look like.

This is how a linux agent displays
