Can't add torrent when transmission is running (Solved)

#1 Post by disallowed »

When I try to add a torrent to the already running transmission, I get the message:
Transmission cannot be started.

Transmission is already running.
So, I have to wait for every downloading to finish before I become able to add another one.

I don't have to wait to finish, but I have to quit transmission every time before add a new torrent.

Hi. Thanks. I saved and extracted transmission_qt-2.8.4.pet at the root directory. How to use it now?

Ok, I can add torrents to this, but it doesn't download. I added torrents with hundreds of seeders, but they're always at 0%.

not sure what's going on there but downloading working fine for me on tahrpup 6.0.2 ... the torrents start downloading after a few seconds.

these are good test torrents http://crunchbang.org/download/

you could try restarting it .... or if all else fails maybe delete the settings folder in /root/.config/transmission WARNING this will delete all current torrents & settings

Restarting transmission solved the problem. Thanks a lot.

Choosing "automatically add torrents from tmp" got me more problems on gtk. When I add a torrent, all torrents I have removed are loaded too. And I don't get rid of the message I wrote for at my first post.

On the other hand, qt works fine for me, without click on "automatically add torrents" option.

Don't think every problem can be worked out by someone else. It boils down to trial'n error on the "users" end.

Ok. I thought that it may was interested for someone. I've done some trials (untick "start when added", tick "move .torrent file to the trash") in various combinations, but of course I haven't eliminated them. I think there's also not reason to do so, since qt works. Sorry if I write things without interest.

Still can't add torrents to transmission

#15 Post by CGP »

One cannot add torrents to Transmission 2.84 by dragging them from the browser PaleMoon 27.2.0. For several previous versions of puppy linux, I added torrents to Transmission by dragging.

I used Puppy Package Manager to update to transmissionI-2.92-i686, but no improvement.

Is there some other way to add torrents to Transmission?

As I've had no trouble, supply a page where you're unable to drag'n drop a torrent.

These guys offer an alternative, standalone client you may find easier to use than Transmission.

Still can't add torrents to transmission

#17 Post by CGP »

Sorry for the delay. I expected an email to announce any reply, but my profile was not set up that way. I fixed the profile.

So, the torrent on the following page, when displayed in the browser Pale Moon, cannot be dragged to my transmission:

https://thepiratebay.org/torrent/166506 ... adeemPC%5D

(not that I would actually download pirated software - I'm only testing Transmission's capability!).

I installed the rpm of Tixati v2.5.3 as you recommended, Semme. Yes, it works fine. I added the same torrent by right clicking 'Get This Torrent' and choosing 'Copy Link Location'. Then in Tixati I chose Add->Open Magnet Link and pasted into the window. The download started ok.

But I still cannot add that torrent to Transmission 2.84.

Thanks for the link to Tixati.

Semme, I tried to drag to Transmission some of the torrents on the page you provided a link to. They did not work. When I tried, a small window opened with the source of the link, the destination folder, ... . That window also said "Calculating Free Space ...". But it never stopped calculating. When I clicked on 'Open' in the small window, the small window closed, but the torrent did not start downloading. I have no idea why it could not calculate the free space. My pup_save has 32 MB free. And the destination folder is not inside the pup_save.

So, I am happy to have a torrent client that works, but I'm still puzzled why Transmission does not work, and maybe other puppy users are, too. I'll try suggestions to get it to work.

With Mozilla browsers such as Palemoon and Firefox you should be able to easily associate Magnet links with Transmission so all you have to do is left click on the Magnet link. The setting is stored in Preferences and can be changed from there.

Also make sure the file /usr/local/bin/xdg-open has the line for magnet links. This should already be done in recent Puppies but check it anyway.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#this script created by Jemimah. see: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63400&start=150
#110115 xdg-open used to be a symlink to defaulthandler.

case "$1" in
        '') exit
                ;;
        magnet:*) exec transmission "$1"
                ;;
        *://*) exec rox -U "$1"
                ;;
        *@*.*) exec rox -U "mailto:${1}"
                ;;
        *) exec rox "$1"
                ;;
esac

OscarTalks, thanks for the nice post.

But it did not help.

In Pale Moon, when I left click on the link 'Get This Torrent' in the PirateBay webpage I stated above, I get this
The address wasn't understood

Pale Moon doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (magnet) isn't associated with any program.

You might need to install other software to open this address.
I don't get what is in your screen shot.

Also, in Pale Moon in Edit->Preferences->Applications, under Content Type, there is no entry for 'magnet'. I don't know how to add one.

Also, here is the content of my /usr/local/bin/xdg-open:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#this script created by Jemimah. see: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63400&start=150
#110115 xdg-open used to be a symlink to defaulthandler.

#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
        '') exit
                ;;
        *://*) exec rox -U "$1"
                ;;
        *@*.*) exec rox -U "mailto:${1}"
                ;;
        *) exec rox "$1"
                ;;
        magnet:*) exec transmission "$1"
                ;;
esac
It seems to be ok, but I am certainly no expert.

Maybe you are using different versions of puppy or Pale Moon?

Other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I believe the magnet line does need to be higher up in the xdg-open file.
Otherwise the wildcard line

Code: Select all

*) exec rox "$1"
will apply and nullify the magnet link command. Try editing this file so it looks and reads like my one. I believe this was a bit of a bug which was discussed in a thread some time ago, but I wouldn't know where to look now. I thought it had been fixed in WoofCE and/or the Puppy updates in Tahr (if that is what you are using).

My Palemoon is 27.2.1 but Magnet links are associated with Transmission in all my Mozilla and Chromium browsers. Everything works. My Puppy is remastered Wheezy with modifications including the xdg-open file as above. I also run a remastered Slacko 5.7 with the same modified xdg-open and everything works in that too.
