Several people seem to have this same problem (in 2.16 and 2.17).
Any changes to sound made with Alsoconf through the wizard are lost (reset to original) on reboot.

UPDATE
I moved my SB card to a different slot
Puppy now uses the SB card as the default.
Got no idea why it works this way.

Thanks for your replies - I have now solved this by cleaning off all puppy files from all partitions (including NTFS), and doing a new puppy frugal install.
ath0 now detects my network from the frugal install.
There must have been some stray files interfering ...
