Last but not least - PROMOTING PUPPY:
I bought 100 CD-Rs, burned the CHUBBY-PUPPY as an iso file and a pup001 file with Opera, Java and other stuff (descriptions in french, german and norwegian) on different CDs, so that the new users
do not have to download a dotput already the first time they want to use Puppy.

I gave the CDs as a present (gift) to some friends who are only using Windows but always fearing to catch a virus or whatever.
I GOT ALL CDs BACK...
Reason number one: I do not want to mess up my computer

The last answer from today almost killed me: "My Norton does not allow to install a virus"

sveitserosten,

i really like that last one about norton not allowing virus install. to myself, & a couple of other windows refugees, norton was worse than any virus/spyware as it wouldn't allow us to do anything!

sveitserosten- welcome to here! :D

My Norton didn't ID Puppy as a virus, something odd there.
Couple thoughts:
tell your friends to check out M$'s new scheme to make their OS even more net-addicted ...the new LIVE & Vista approach is to make terminals out of our computers, and rent us software that we used to own. Many reviewers have great concerns about this potentially costly Big Brother approach. Both Germany and France have committed to Linux over issues like this.

If you want to be a Johnny Appleseed, and Switzerland is like elsewhere, there are all sorts of semi-obsolete computers in closets and tech shops. The best way to demo Puppy is to set up a machine, say as an entertainment server (that also just happens to send email, draws pictures, and does homework)

Sorry for the late answer, my OS did not start and I had to re-install.

In the meantime I found an old notebook and installed Puppy. I will have to find a Swiss keyboard layout and then I can give the notebook to friends, so they can test it.
That was a good idea :D - thank you - this is much better than just giving away a CD.
I also wanted to install a drawing program for children which works fine in Vector Linux but I seem to be too stupid to install it in Puppy...

just post the program that you want to use as there is a willing puppy brain's trust.

Tuxpaint

Thank you Guest for your offer - thank you Lobster for the tip.
Yes, Tuxpaint version 0.9.14 installs fine as alien pkg in Puppy.
I first tried to install version 0.9.15 wich did not work.
But I did not mention any differences in the program versions itself.

I have dual nationality (British/Swiss - my Canton is Herisau) though my spiritual home is Atlantis (which most probably does not exist) but enough about me

If I was starting out in Linux I would go support Nathan - that way I would learn. I would be supporting Puppy and Tux. Initially I had intended to create my own distro but felt it more important to do what little I could to encourage good work that already existed. Puppy was the best I could find. 8)

This odd subject that many may disagree with or see as useless came to me while thinking about spreading the word of puppy to pple. Cursed with a overactive imagination i was dreaming about renting a large building like the one a flea market down here uses and having a puppy propaganda event. Putting up a sign Around town Promoting puppy and the date of the event to attract pple to the subject of using puppy. I mean truthfully If you put never have to throw away a computer or waste money to keep up with demanding times just to check your damn email and type a essay pple would flock to the idea. At this event puppy CDs would be sold for 5-10$ and the money donated to the almighty barry to help with development and costs for puppy. Old computers for sale a large projector with puppy on it for display so pple can tinker while others watch. (i told you over active imaginations are a curse)

Anywho but then it hit me. If it does pull in pple and draws a large crowd what would that mean for the community? If this event goes on for a few days and brings in a large amount of pple the next day every one of them is going to log into the forum for help @.@ and wed have 100s of noobs filling the boards with "Plz help me" topics. obviously our 20-30 person (guestimating) army of experts wouldn't be able to handle this flood of pple.

<SNIP>
Great idea!
Can we build on that? Say mashinate it and refine it. Like a lap running
whatever and Puppy with the connected projector for all to see. A couple of dead PCs (or seriously wounded one onhand). Also the propoganda asks to "Bring your dead ones". And, thinking the future. Experts available via wireless to support 'the field folk'.

NEXT?

Oh, Some kind of tracking software to collect data on (everything?) from
who, how many, PC specs, accomplishments and on and on..... :-)

AND, Things to ask the 'Flea' before setting up.

Ok, Ok I'm done.

Thanks for the ear, ...BluGold
