Manual frugal install on a usb 16g

This is a very nice puppy that you have done. I only found one thing, When you exit the Rebuild Menu button does start the script.

I also like the savefolder that is different, but it is good, When I went to make the save file I thought I missed something since it did not ask what size I wanted my save file to be. Is there anything about that is the save process or any where else?

A savefolder is an ordinary directory on your partition. And like any other directory, it's size is not configured anywhere.

Hello @OldYeller
oldyeller wrote:... the savefolder that is different ... Is there anything about that is the save process or ...
@Gyro correctly points out that allowing TahrPup to use a savefolder versus a savefile allows most users to NEVER be affected by the maxsize of the old savefile technology. Your session changes are now contained in "a folder" instead of "the previously restricted file on other and older PUPs".

This upgrade to save-session technology, embraced by TahrPUP, was created by Puppy members, here, and should be available to ALL PUPs built using WOOF2 from this point on.

Hope this helps

Shouldn't the defaultaudioplayer be deadbeef rather than vlc???

That is why pclock doesn't work properly when assigning a music alarm.

@666philb

Sorry, but I still think they are some tweaks, at least before thinking to replace Precise.

I quickly tested rc1 PAE and non PAE.
By the way, I propose that the boot screen is visually different than of Precise and PAE and non PAE version also have different boot screen, for instance mirror image, inverted colours

Reproducable crash with non-PAE vs PAE.
If I de-activate the wifi hardware on my laptop by toggling through F12 under Win7 and reboot than:
* if it's rc1 PAE, than if I tried to establish a WLAN connexion I get "Failed to activate interface 'wlan0'. Sometiles this is just a tempory problem". With retro Precise 5.7.1 same error. OK
* if it's rc1 non-PAE, as soon as I try through the simple connexion Wireless, I have a freeze, once I have a kernel crash. FYI also with beta3, but OK with retro Precise 5.7.1
* Note, I do not know how to re-activate my wifi, otherwise than reboot Win7.

Seems other hardware issues, but no time to check now.

Otherwise:
>lxrandr is in there ... shows up as 'monitor settings' in the system menu
Indeed, but I propose to rename the menu entry as "multiple monitors settings.

Propose to add:
xbatarlarm (works fine).

To allow:
Global Font size values greater than 108, indeed I wanted to propose to an old man tahr as a replacement for WinXp, but font are too small for his eyes. Note FatDog7 allows to enter your value.

The QuickPet tahr does not point as PPM to the latest available version, for instance Firefox 32.x vs 30.x

Update:
* SECURITY: bash....
https://www.debian.org/security/2014
* Gparted 0.16 -> 0.18
* pBurn (OK for me) http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23881
* mhwaveedit (OK for me) http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=88036
* Regarding ntfs-3g, I use version 2014 for nearly a year with West & Easter characters documents, and OK for me.

Wish:
Would be nice to add thumbnails videos preview, as in puppy_Pupjibaro (you can change language to English to have a peek)
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 15&t=92892

Getting near.

Thanks for your work

The Puppy world would be simpler if builders would make some choices and stick with them. Pick one kernel. Pick PAE vs non-PAE. What are your plans for long-term support? If a version proves to be buggy, what will you do? Patch it? Remove it from distribution? Let it hang around forever?

Don't you think 'derivatives" should be the playground, where everything is allowed ?

I fully agree with your vision for mainstream (official releases) puppy, but (correct me if I am wrong) there is not much movement in mainstream anymore since the mains dev's are becomming thin.

It is the derivatives that shed some light in the puppy darkness. Some of them may even be candidates for mainstream puppies. Such as TahrPup, especially because it breaks with some of the traditions for packages (i.e. VLC versus Mplayer)or the LxPup series from PeeBee (LXDE is simply more visually appealing than JWM, and works mor intiutive for someone used the MS in his job).

Anyway...puppy is as it is ...

I still have a hard time seeing which puppy, TahrPup is derivative of... :?

My comment was in regards to live's situation where the retro version does not work the same way as the main version.

Puppy builders tend to throw out these alternate versions in the name of "choice" without subjecting them to adequate testing.

I always thought that retro is for the support of older hardware that modern kernels leave behind.
Testing wise I guess with so many options testing is running very thin. Is done usually by few people that test almost everything and thus only briefly.
That's why is always better to have a "final" release followed by a bug-fix release rather than multiple betas and RCs

Here is my personal feeling on this issue. Older hardware should be supported by older, well-tested Puppies that were designed for that generation.

hi oldyeller, this is working for me ..... when you click the rebuild menu button, the logout screen should just disappear and the menu is rebuilt silently in the background.

hi live,

concerning your wifi, i found this post that may help in turning it on and off http://ns1.murga-projects.com/puppy/vie ... 187988c042
it's worth doing a search with google and also the forum, stating the make and model of the laptop and the problem,as there may be a simple fix that can be added.

lxrandr name changed fix in quickpet 'tahrbug fixes'
global font size (you can now select up to 150) fix in quickpet 'tahrbug fixes'
bash update ... fix in quickpet 'tahrbug fixes'
mhwaveedit updated in quickpet 'tahrbug fixes'
pburn has already been updated

xbatalarm will be added as an option in quickpet but i'm not including it as it seems to interfere with the puppy build process

gparted and ntfs-3g are being left at there current versions as they are working fine and updating them now could open up 'a can of worms' (a possibility for a future tahrpup)

rox video thumbnails ... i don't want to add this as on low end equipment a folder full of films can take a very long time for the video thumbnails to build causing the computer to lag.

quickpet will be updated ... eventually

thanks
