7.90 beta
There doesn't seem to be much wrong with it, but thought I would upload this beta, probably do 8.0, the final, about 21st of April.
Download from here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... erus-7.90/
Not yet at Nluug, but the files should turn up here sometime:
http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/quir ... /releases/
Readme file:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky ... s-7.90.htm
I have found some bugs.
One of them is in BluePup, my bluetooth management GUI. When you bring it up, either from menu, click on the icon in tray, or run "bluepup" in a terminal, the "SCAN & PAIR" button needs an adjustment -- click the "edit" button alongside it and change the timeout for "power on" from "10" to "30" (that will be 5 seconds to 15 seconds).
One observation: I reported this on my blog. A USB3 Flash stick is much faster than a USB2 Flash stick, even in a USB2 socket!
So, to enhance the experience even if your PC only has USB2 sockets, use a USB3 Flash drive.
If you want to know what is new and interesting in Quirky Xerus, read through my blog:

Anyway, if anyone wants to play with Quirky Xerus, go for it!

Hi Barry,
my old usb stick is only 2GB (LOL). Can you please make an iso version ?
(I notice fdisk shows a 512Mb "EFI System" partition to boot ?)
You said busybox was buggy, but I use it and replaced all in /bin and /sbin...So what's the problem with "tr" , buggy or missing feature ?
Notice in ppm :
grep: unrecognized option `--file=
busybox uses "grep -f FILE" instead
Did you solve the no xorg.conf bug ? I did it with minimal xorg.conf
Did you try minimal busybox mdev ? I use it everyday.
I also replaced seamonkey with firefox (matter of taste, but also easier to compile and many sites accept it better than seamonkey for compatibility, etc). I am using the compiled version of firefox, with automatic updates.
Cheers

Busybox has lots of applets that are missing features. Typically, it is source package compile scripts that expect the full versions of utilities.linuxcbon wrote:You said busybox was buggy, but I use it and replaced all in /bin and /sbin...So what's the problem with "tr" , buggy or missing feature ?
In the case of 'tr', I gave the wrong results when I used octal numbers. For example "\20" is an octal number.
I was using a range of octal numbers, something like "[\40-\125]", It output the wrong results, but not even an error message, just the wrong output.
The full 'tr' works great.

Quirky uses the full 'grep'. This is another case, the reason I don't recall, where I don't use the applet.linuxcbon wrote:Notice in ppm :

But, if the Busybox grep won't accept the full commandline options, that is enough reason not to use it.
Busybox is one of those utilities very widely used, and it has to work right in all circumstances.
My choices are the outcome of compiling hundreds of source packages and using all kinds of scripts.

why ? you are wrong...mdev is very good. Works perfectly, extremly fast, takes only 2 lines in sysinit. No udev, no bug, no rules, nothing..Udev too complicated, too buggy, too slow, too big.BarryK wrote:i looked at it sometime ago, not interested.linuxcbon wrote:Did you try minimal busybox mdev ? ok I see. But it's because busybox uses minimal options and not "long" options.BarryK wrote:Quirky uses the full 'grep'. This is another case, the reason I don't recall, where I don't use the applet.

But busybox doesnt aim to replace 100% all utilities, only the most used options.
Actually, I wish the scripts and the compiling stuff would adapt to busybox, because it's very very standard and very efficient and light and used in embedded systems etc. So it's not only busybox which has to adapt, but others have to make efforts too, otherwise, it would be too easy and nobody would do anything.
Bugzilla for reporting bugs in busyboxBarryK wrote:In the case of 'tr', I gave the wrong results when I used octal numbers. For example "\20" is an octal number.

I have an E200HA also!mda wrote:Hi Barry,
thank you a lot for the great work you're doing!
I'm trying quirky xerus 7.90 from a 16gb usb key on my asus e200ha.
Unfortunately, the touchpad doesn't work (it did with ubuntu 16.04 beta).
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thank you very much in advance!
I thought that the touchpad was working. Hmmm, maybe I changed something that broke it. I have been recompiling the kernel many times, trying different config options.
I will investigate.

Quirky Xerus 7.90 (8.0beta)
Hi Barry & thanks for your latest beta.
For an initial quick test I installed the 8GB image to a USB3 stick.
Background info:
Having increased the DPI to 102 I found that the JWM Configuration Manager/Tray management could not be
used to change the Tray Height from 28 and had to alter it manually. That did work in Werewolf.
Another issue is the following errors in the xerrs.log - font cache update issue???
So far I have only installed Google Chrome Version 50.0.2661.75 (64-bit) which is working well with
sandboxing disabled.

Quirky Xerus 7.90 (8.0beta)
I tried to install the 32gb image to 2 different flash drives that
claim to be 32gb but they wouldn't boot.
I installed the 16gb image to one of the 32gb flash drive and it
works, made the remainder of the drive ext4 to store files on.

Testing on an Intel P4 w/5GB RAM. Minor issues in this post; some of which you may have already addressed.
Downloaded and installed using dd v8.21. I downloaded your 4GB upload and installed to an 8GB stick. This was done to insure the 4GB image would install to larger stick and boot without issues. Before the 4GB image was installed to the stick, all contents were erased from the stick. Thus the install process was started on a MSDOS partition-table stick with NO partitions defined. After installation, the stick looks like this in GParted:
Request
When this message surfaces in GParted for viewing the stick, What do you advise community members to do? Should they "fix" or should they "ignore"?
Booted with no issues to desktop. Time to desktop was about 1.5 minutes. I filled FirstRUN as follows:
Open JWM manager to configure minor changes. Got an error on one of JWM's feature shown as follows:
On another of JWM issue, although this being old problem, it does NOT reflect the current taskbar Window status reporting 1x1 when it should show OOTB status of 1x3. 1x1 shown as follows against the desktop's backdrop:
Next, free command was reviewed to get a RAM use gauge. Each of the following shows report.Later:
SAMBA was started for all of the shares that the HDD provides for LAN users. "smbclient" utility is available and working now:Mount command in Xerus works for accessing remote shares from LAN, as well:
I am also able to access this Xerus PC's shares from other LAN devices.
All seems to be operating without crashes, thus far. Using SeaMonkey to report these from the Xerus desktop.
@BarryK, might you consider @01Micko's LAN taskbar facility where a mouse-over shows the current IP of this PC?
Any additional specifics you would want, request them and I will attempt testing.
